| 1270214 | 2012-04-16 09:18:00 | It wasn't very nice software though as I couldn't alter the display settings so everything was large. I recall from previous experiences that that might have been due to a missing or not working driver. Hmmm. Windows Update would update your video driver that should fix that one up. Have you registered it yet. Cos it may lock you out eventually. Not happened to me personally though. Your USB stick could be infected. If I was you get another one, you don't want to loose your entire research project! And yes, my computer crashed when I was doing my 400 level research project too :p Also keep more than one copy in diffferent place. For me the hard drive died, they sent me a new one but no Windows. But I had my own Windows (newer version). Most branded computers these days just don't give you the CD anymore (maybe to save costs). You could get it but they usually charge you. |

Any good repair shop wouldn't have a single tech available, and contactable only for one day a week. Hate to think how much they have ripped you off money wise :groan: |

| 1270216 | 2012-04-16 09:30:00 | This guy has a job in IT in Wellington and comes home on weekends, I found out too late. A woman looks after the shop during the week. She doesn't know a single thing about pc's - just books the pc's in etc. I needed that pc fixed urgently and she assured me that there is nothing that he couldn't fix, and that to her knowledge her knowledge it had never happened that he wasn't able to fix a pc. I wondered about the odds of it turning out that my pc happened to be the first pc he had not been able to fix. Perhaps she meant toasters. | LouiseJ001 (16751) | ||
| 1270217 | 2012-04-16 09:35:00 | Heres a hint ;) , any thing can be fixed, it involves having the knowledge on how to fix it, with software sometimes actually reinstalling, can be quicker as well as other programs. Hardware depending on whats wrong, if faulty, is usually quicker and cheaper to replace. The simple fact he put on an illegal License instantly suggests hes dishonest. This guy has a job in IT in Wellington and comes home on weekends Bet hes not a real tech then ;) just someone who thinks he is. I see it all the time, people who work in a IT job and they think they know it all. No one knows everything. |

Unfortunately, this reads to me as "He is a script reader for a helpdesk, and plays at fixing stuff on weekends". I don't know what your legal standpoint with the shop is, but if you really just want the PC up and running, as has been suggested earlier, let us know where in NZ you are and there maybe someone from PF1 local to you that can help fix things up properly. |

| 1270219 | 2012-04-16 09:46:00 | Thank you. That's very reassuring. I was charged $75ph and ended up paying about $240. It's not a lot of money, but it's a lot when you don't have it, and when you go away no closer to it getting fixed or knowing what's wrong. One day I phoned asking for a copy of my files that he retrieved, and after a few days the junior tech produced a cd. I was charged $15.00 for it and got it home only to find that it was some file that directed me to the internet to download something about profiles. A shambles. |

| 1270222 | 2012-04-16 10:11:00 | $240 for a stuffed up shambles and illegal software to add to insult . :groan: Mikes comment made earlier sounds like its the case in fact ;) | wainuitech (129) | ||
| 1270223 | 2012-04-16 10:12:00 | Unfortunately, when I was in Windows 7 I came across something that said that there was hardware that hadn't yet been installed, so I clicked the button to install that, but that resulted in a blue screen and now it's just looping around so any attempt to repair must be done by an expert as I can't even access the Launch Windows Repair. I scanned the USB stick several times with Spybot and AVG, but I certainly wouldn't use it again now, given that I don't know if it had something to do with the failure of the pc. Ah, so you have been there with the 4th year report. Maybe pc's time-out after 3+ years of study. It's scary because you so depend on it, not just to write your report but research also. I also upload to Google docs now. That's really useful. I didn't know that a hard drive could die. Lucky you had your own Windows. | LouiseJ001 (16751) | ||
