| 1248004 | 2011-12-10 17:19:00 | There are many jobs a deaf person can do. (probably most jobs) But here is one that they could not do - Call centre operator. But I do think that we as tax payers deserve the best value from our MP's and I stlll stand by my asertion that in the cut and thrust of debate in the house she will not be able to contribute as much as a hearing person. And I certainly was not rude in my comments. I agree we should get the 'best value' from our MP's. I have not ever been in the debating chamber but do you assert that an MP's ability to participate in a debate is the measure of a good MP? If you think about the debates you have seen on TV, consider exactly what is going on. The sides and the votes regarding a bill have already been decided. If let's say a National member were to listen to a Labour speaker and because of the eloquence of their speech, the logical reasoning and argument presented is without a doubt the best speech ever presented, do you seriously think the National member will cross the floor? I am sure the news snippits we see are just a small portion of the actual work that is done. I would like to think so otherwise we are relying on an MP's gift of the gab, not the hard graft that is required in the engine room. She get's a chance and as I stated earlier, time will tell whether we get good value or not. Parliament has been here long before I have been alive and I am sure in every generation there have been members of parliament where we have had good value, and many where we haven't. Let's give her a try. |

End of the day she cannot be any worse than the hear nothing from Wagner or that NZF MP who only got 500 votes but has a seat thanks to Winne. |

And I certainly was not rude in my comments. You talk about value, but how many MPs actually turn up or actively participate in the debating chamber - let alone the inexperienced ones? Rubbishing someone just because they are Deaf shows ignorance. Whether she will work hard during her term is independent of her hearing. ... (guess his girlfriend Jen will ban me again but it was worth it LOL)No, but if you insult me once more I will kick your ass off the forum. Mods are are entitled to the same protection the forum rules offer others, and I don't have to put up with childish remarks. Got it? |

| 1248012 | 2011-12-10 22:05:00 | Just heard the final election results. I am a bit upset that we are gong to have a deaf MP. (even though most of the others are dumb) It seems to me that the Greens were a bit irresponsible putting a deaf person on their list ! She is profoundly deaf, so how will she be able to listen to all the debates in parliament. And we now have to pay for a full time translator ! Most other sorts of disabilities would be OK with me, but a law maker needs to be able to hear whats going on in the heat of debate and select committees etc . You really are a [edited] aren't you. Never happy with anything and always moaning, and I really think this just takes the biscuit and is offensive beyond belief that you are complaining that a deaf person is making their way in life and its going to cost you some money to pay for a translator. Well I'll tell you what send me your details and I'll pay your $2/year contribution to breaking down barriers and predjuices...thank god she isn't black, brown, yellow or anything other colour otherwise you'd have a field day i'm sure...oh hang she wears galsses...that ok ? God its just like Phnom Penh 1978... "I've said it before, there is no need to get personal or abusive on here." - and if Mojo Mathers uses this forum you dont think she would find your original post personal ? Yes you'll report my post and yes i'll get banned but Digby I concur with KarameaDave you really are a pompous ass. |

| 1248013 | 2011-12-10 23:50:00 | Trev is the only one that has realised that, like many deaf people, lip reading is a skill they learn at an early age, so I imagine that's how she will be able to keep up with what's going on. | Roscoe (6288) | ||
