1247361 2011-12-06 21:13:00 The current benefit to job transition path, usually ends up with the person getting less for more

All that says to me, then, is the lazybastard handouts are too much.

There are a lot of things wrong in the economy (both within NZ and globally), and certainly greed is one of those factors, but so is this expectation of "durrr I don't have to do anything the government will just support me herp".

1247362 2011-12-06 21:51:00 So prices of burgers & bottom end retail go up a wee bit ...
Who else is on minimum wage?

Labourers, factory workers, shovel hands, traffic controllers, plant operators, tree trimmers, lawn mowers, cleaners, cooks.

I'm sure there are plenty more.

The problem is that the wage bill can easily be lowered, lay someone off and don't hire more people, just stress out your existing work force.

The other costs of running a business cant' be altered by firing people, and a policy that encourages you not toexpand your workforce isn't good for the economy, it kills growth. And creates more low paid casual jobs where people are treated like **** and have no security.

1247363 2011-12-06 21:53:00 I can't disagree based on some of the stories I have seen.
Having said that, I certainly wouldn't like to try to live on that money.

I do think there needs to be a clear monetary incentive to get off the benefit and into work, but just screwing those who can't work (for legitimate reasons) is not a helpful direction to go either.

These clipboard transportation technicians seem to be doing alright then :)

I'm sure all the people being screwed over the value of their land will be pleased to see the EQC dollars hard at work.

If you were right, then that would be a problem, but that's not what's going to happen, so there's nothing to worry about.

Ever tried to get on the benefit? It's an absolute joke. I was the only white guy in there when I tried (In between jobs), I was the only person who even bothered to *look* at the THOUSANDS of jobs that they had on offer.
Wanna be a baker? It's right nearby, you start at 4AM, finish early, easy work, training on the job, pays around $18 an hour. Nope, none of the lazy bastards there wanted to wake up early, so they weren't forced to.

As far as I'm concerned if somebody is giving you a handout, you don't say "Bugger off I don't want a ham and tomato sandwich, I want a Big Mac", you say "Thankyou very much for that, I really appreciate that you've gone out of your way to provide for me when I have very little, even though you are not obligated to do-so". Same goes for taking money from the Govt. If you don't wanna actively look for a job and try out things like being a baker, brick-layer, things like that which require little training that pretty much anybody can do, then cut the damn funds and starve them to death. The world will be a better place for it.

EDIT: It's worth noting that the day after my initial interview and "slideshow" that they show you (DVD presentation), I got a job on my own. My interview concluded with:
"So you want something in IT Mr Chilling_Silence?"
"Yes, that's what I'm good at, anything IT, computers, telephony, whatever"
"OK well we don't have anything available like that at the moment so we'll make arrangements to begin your payments in about a weeks time, and if something comes up we'll let you know".
"So I don't have to take the job as a baker, even though I'm perfectly capable?"
"No Sir, not if you don't want to."

WTF SRSLY?! That's legitimately how it happened... And it's wrong!

EDIT 2: Metla for PM!

I'm not so much concerned with people hiring family, that is always going to happen, but with whoever came up with those pay rates, Its completely out of step with everything else in the entire country, if not the entire world.

Way over the line and action should be taken immediately to correct it, offer everyone a maximum rate of $28 an hour, $22 for anyone under 25 years old, Those that don't like it can go elsewhere.

I had an equally bizarre experience with them, and it became immediately obvious that there entire system is just a facade for those that are too useless to help themselves, You need to become one of them to fit into their system.

Hah. I can tell you different stories.
I made the mistake of going there once. Plenty of white people, arab people, brown people, young people, really old people, all sorts.

"So you want something in IT Ms Pctek?"
"Not necessarily, but there is more IT on my CV - even the amended one than anything else"
"we don't get much like that. You can't sit around and expect to have a lifestyle you know, we'll be sending you to anything we have and you'll be taking it".
"Like I said, it doesn't have to be"(produce list of applied jobs been for already, most of which weren't IT)
"Oh so you've already applied for these?"
"yes, forget it"
Leave and get one without their non-help.

Take a look at what you actually get on nthe dole.
Then add the accommodation allowance. You can't live on it, lazy bastards must be supplementing it illegally because it doesn't cover your bills.

Then take a minimum wage job, compare to your standard bills. Then add transport costs, I don't care what it is - bus or car. It was $6.80 one way for me to town BTW on the bus.
Then figure out how that works...they don't give you anything once you get the job and if you can't pay your basics then what?

My job isn't real high paying, but I sure wouldn't have stopped with one of the offers I got - it was a joke, and miles away, so I did a bit more contracting and kept looking.

1247370 2011-12-07 00:38:00 I have to start going through all that crap in the new year, I'm deemed capable of returning to work now, even though if I do anything physical for more than half an hour i'm in pain. All my working life I have done physical work, so what are they going to offer me, I just looked through the list of jobs for Nelson and I can't do any of them, even with training as they are all physical jobs.

I don't want to be on the benefit next year so am doing everything I can to upskill myself. I'm teaching myself CAD, I've built 2 3D printers from scratch (steep learning curve there), but at age 44 I'm already getting passed over for interviews as being too old. At this stage I can't even get a job in a supermarket as each one in Nelson has a waiting list of over 100 students coming out of school.

Only thing going for me is I can walk into town from here in 15 minutes so won't have travel expenses if I can get a job in town
