2012-04-15 10:24:00 | Based on what you've described, this was complete technical incompetence. I can only assume their core business is nothing even remotely technical. Is it just a toaster shop? | inphinity (7274) | |
2012-04-15 10:57:00 | I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the copy of win7 is illegal. You can install it without a product key and use it for 30 days before you have to enter in a product key and activate it. That's not illegal. You can in fact get a 90 day trial of win7 enterprise if you want to. . The original post mentioned it had a non-genuine copy of Windows 7 on it. The Trial version if entered with no product key only pops up saying it has to be activated, not generally the not genuine message. BTW - you can actually use it for 120 days by "rearming" ;) If a Enterprise version is installed as a trial, its pre pidded , then when its time to purchase its a catch 22 - you cant use a Home Pre/Professional/Ultimate COA to activate, you have to wipe the drive and reinstall. You cant purchase a Enterprise License from any shop (legally) unless you are entitled to have Enterprise licensing. Anyway its looked at, this is a total mess and the job not done as should have been.

2012-04-16 01:28:00 | well if you have ever installed windows it says that it is non genuine until you can connect to the internet and enter in the license. So perhaps the technician couldn't get the computer to boot so he started fresh by re installing an OS and before he/she could get round to it you asked for it back. The best thing to do is find someone with a XP disc install it and use the code on your computer. | Slankydudl (16687) | |
2012-04-16 02:16:00 | well if you have ever installed windows it says that it is non genuine until you can connect to the internet and enter in the license. It can't check to see if it's legitimate until a product key has been entered and the OS activated ;)The genuine check happens during activation. | pcuser42 (130) | |
2012-04-16 02:17:00 | well if you have ever installed windows it says that it is non genuine until you can connect to the internet and enter in the license If the message is on the desktop, that only happens on very rare occasions with legit installs. 99% of the time it shows unactivated under computer properties, along with how many days left, which is completely different to not genuine - sometimes it shows with not genuine if the OS is damaged and new hardware is installed, then it disappears after activation. Even on a new install it doesn't actually say Genuine under Computer/properties unless its been activated. If it is an illegal Licence, then it shows as not genuine. Before you ask, I install windows many times a week ;)

2012-04-16 02:46:00 | I just installed XP on a computer yesterday and you get to put in the product key at the beginning of the installation and once you have installed it a message pops up from the bottom right task bar asking you if you want to activate it and have 30 days to do so. :)

2012-04-16 03:05:00 | well if you have ever installed windows it says that it is non genuine until you can connect to the internet and enter in the license . . No it doesn't . It says Activate . And some tech will just donate a copy of Win7 during a repair? Even if I did repairs, I used the original version of Windows . If I had to wipe it, I'd retrieve their stuff, reinstall with the same version of Winsdows - and not if they didn't have a sticker - then do all the drivers and stuff after .

2012-04-16 09:13:00 | Hi all, Thank you all for your support . I've been trawling the internet all day trying to work out what kind of position I am in 'legally', i . e . thinking about the disputes tribunal . The shop wasn't expecting me to arrive and take the pc away . They seemed to be avoiding me, so I was assuming no work had been done on it . They knew that I didn't have an XP Pro installation disk - but it's all legal and the product key is on the side of the pc . They knew I didn't have money to pay for any more work on it, but they offered to take one last look for nothing . I had paid quite a bit afterall and it wasn't fixed and not even an attempt at a diagnosis . I have learned today that I will need an XP installation cd in order to reinstall XP Pro . Afterall, Windows 7 is now the OS . And things are so bad with the pc that a reinstall seems to be the only option . The Windows 7 version he used was a Windows 7 build - so, as I understand it, that version would not even enable them to retrieve XP files . It stated that 'This copy of Windows is not genuine' as I recall, and that the authority had expired . Yes, they did retrieve my files at the outset, thankfully . If I get the opportunity I will be wanting, first and foremost, to find out more about that software . Apparently there is a Microsoft site where you can have your software validated . It wasn't very nice software though as I couldn't alter the display settings so everything was large . I recall from previous experiences that that might have been due to a missing or not working driver . Hmmm . I thought about what you said, pctek, that I shouldn't have removed my pc from their 'care' . You are so right, as from the tribunals' point of view, I have not given them the opportunity to put things right . But, how long does a person have to wait? I took the pc into them prior to 6th September!!! With no return phone call, and when I phoned five weeks later, as soon as the guy on the phone found out who I was, suddenly the technician/owner wasn't available to speak to me . I know that my pc was in a very bad way - but now it is even much worse as it doesn't even have my OS on it etc . If I took it to the tribunal I would imagine he would just say it was a mistake and I didn't give him a chance to fix it . He just handed it over without telling me he had done that, said it was stuffed, goodbye . It's actually a shop on the main street, so people feel they are going to professionals - but they don't tell people that there is only one day per week that a qualified technician is available to work on pc's . What's more, you cannot communicate with the technician except on Saturdays . I told them it was urgent - fourth year uni by that time - the big research report and no pc to work on . By the way, thank you for that information about the spin-write machine Mikebartnz . That's interesting . I now suspect it could have been my USB stick drive - I crashed the library computer with it too . Apparently they can cause shorting out . I didn't think to tell the repair shop that at the time as when it originally crashed it was telling me there was something wrong with a driver, but then I tried to fix it, and things went pear-shaped from there . Oh dear . I will let you know how I get on . Again, thanks for all your posts . I will try to sort this rogue out .

In Windows 7, you can type "font size" into Start Search to bring up the font size settings :) (not that I really expect you to keep Windows 7 in this case. :p) |
