1247995 2011-12-10 07:50:00 Anyway back to the real issue. She was on TV tonight and said she would have no problems in the house as she can lipread and also have parliment streaming live to her laptop with subtitles.

1247996 2011-12-10 08:10:00 Yes I saw her interviewed on TV1 news. I was surprised how well she spoke. As Pctech said at least she will not have to listen to some of the c***p they talk in the house. I do not vote green but she seems to be a lot brighter than some MPs I have met. CliveM (6007)

So Digby, that seems to deal with the translation issue does it not?

1247999 2011-12-10 09:32:00 Nothing wrong with being deaf, or being a deaf MP.
She is more educated than most MPs, anyway.

At least that transgender/heshe/ladyboy freak is out of Parliament.

1248000 2011-12-10 09:37:00 Big deal.

How many participants (is that is the correct word?) use it on a daily basis?

What about Polish, Indian, Samoan, Egyptian, Greek, French and so on??

I'm sure that there are more of them in NZ than deaf speakers.

I would say there are more people in NZ who can speak Hindi, Mandarin, Cantonese and Arabic than Maori, lets get rid of Maori then?

Big difference. Everyone one of those foreign speakers can do one thing - hear. They therefore have the opportunity to learn english. They also have a country of origin from which their language is spoken and their culture is maintained. They have a connection to their mother country and the politics that goes on there whether they participate or not is their decision.

Deaf people that are pre-lingually deaf can't learn english the same way you and I have. Think about it, really think about how you learnt english (or any language) and what age you started to be educated. It wasn't 5yrs old when your mother took you to school.

95% of deaf children have hearing parents so what sort of learning do you think a deaf child gets from the time they exit the womb?

Mojo is an exception and although i do not agree with MMP, she is there now and time will tell what sort of impact she will have.

1248003 2011-12-10 16:59:00 There are many jobs a deaf person can do. (probably most jobs)

But here is one that they could not do - Call centre operator.

But I do think that we as tax payers deserve the best value from our MP's and I stlll stand by my asertion that in the cut and thrust of debate in the house she will not be able to contribute as much as a hearing person.

And I certainly was not rude in my comments.
