2012-04-15 08:06:00 | Hmmm ... do you know anyone that knows a thing or two about computers? Technically, you have the XP license code sticker thingy on your computer right? Someone could install XP if they had a compatible CD and use that code and then install the other bits and pieces. I know that Victoria Uni, not sure about other ones, they have a IT Clinic place for students, probably a reduced price. Yes, you are right as that is what the repair shop did originally. Unfortunately I'm a Massey distance student but I will make enquiries. Thanks for that. I do feel a bit agrieved about this as it's as though I put my car in for repair and it came out with a new engine without my knowledge or consent, but in order to use it I have to pay for it. That's just got to be wrong. However, I do have a working pc but after that experience, and given I depend so much on having a working pc for study, I'd like to have it working in case this one falls over.

2012-04-15 08:15:00 | It sounds to me the shop tried to do a XP repair. That didn't work, so they installed Windows 7 and they didn't do all the other bits and pieces which might explain why you have things that was not installed correctly. If they had a XP CD they could have used that instead of using a Win7 CD .... | Nomad (952) | |
2012-04-15 08:23:00 | Thank you. That's really kind of you. I'm a bit worried it wouldn't be so straight forward as it baffled that technician, and he has a thriving business - although that doesn't necessarily mean anything. My pride is getting in the way here - a bit old fashioned you see - I think I'd like to see what I can do first, and if I get stuck, perhaps I can ask for help on the Forum? Thank you again. | LouiseJ001 (16751) | |
2012-04-15 08:50:00 | Sounds like you got a bad company the technician is only there on Saturday's (more like cowboys or complete idiots). What you described, even if the system was badly damaged previously and having to do a full reinstall on XP, installing the appropriate drivers and testing, after saving all your data, is a piece of cake. Wouldn't matter one bit if the OS would boot or not, ANY place or real Tech/ person with the right knowledge/software, that knows what they are doing could easily get the current product key off of the install. By rights it should be on the side of the case if its a OEM as its been mentioned. As for not having the CD's -- Thats a damn joke - once again anyplace that knows what they are doing will have copies of all the OS's, all they would need is a product key. Putting on an illegal copy of any MS OS is just that ILLEGAL -- If they are a real shop, then Microsoft could have a field day. If they have done it to you theres a damn good chance they do it to others.

2012-04-15 08:53:00 | so it took many weeks before it got to the spin-write stage SpinRite is a program for checking and repairing a HD. Sounds like the tech was a bit clueless. If it was shutting down I would have first suspected the PSU but it would be very unlikely that a reinstall was going to fix the problem and you don't install a different OS. Once again where do you live because there are some very helpful people here.

At the end of the day it sounds like he wasn't a techs ar$e hole. |

2012-04-15 09:09:00 | I prefer not to say the name of the repair place as I could end up taking it to disputes tribunal. Dam right you should. However naming them is irrelevant to that. What you need to take there is all the facts, the PC in question and all correspondence and invoices etc you had/got of them.

2012-04-15 10:17:00 | I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the copy of win7 is illegal . You can install it without a product key and use it for 30 days before you have to enter in a product key and activate it . That's not illegal . You can in fact get a 90 day trial of win7 enterprise if you want to . Perhaps they put it on your machine to test and never got around to completing the job . What did they do with your data before it got wiped and win7 loaded on? Sounds pretty bad and not really a computer repair shop at all if the tech only works on Saturdays .
