1247933 2011-12-10 08:46:00 Ok way back when adam was a cowboy i have been redecorating my house. I have recently finninshed the lounge, so i have 2 bedrooms and a dining room and lounge done.
Today i saw in mitre 10 mega those click together wood fake? floor tiles........... they on special.
www.mitre10mega.co.nz

what i want to know is............has any one used them, can any silly beetle put it together? or should i avoid it like the plague?
i have a kitchen and hall way to paint, and then put house on market........... and i dont want to spend mega $$ on new carpet the next person may not like.

so if you redid your house, what did you put on the floor, why and who did it? (you or proffesional)

thanks all.

1247934 2011-12-10 08:56:00 It's pretty easy but then I'm a joiner/carpenter by trade. I would consider it or maybe vinyl if your going to sell gary67 (56)
1247935 2011-12-10 09:10:00 yeah well, i have plastered and painted, sanded and all that, and have a floor with 1960's lino on the floor in tile pattern but lino / vinyl.
If i put down lino / vinyl is it possible to do that all ova the house again? straaight ova top? around the edges it will need a bit of sand / fill maybe from the carpet it had previous.

i just wish i could find some one who i can ring, get them quote a job and actually come back and do it! not exactly happy with any of the local people i have talked to so far.

i like the idea i could do it myself, but am wondering about the after care, if i cant mop a wooden floor......... can you seal it?
i really like the idea of wood floors tho. :)
thanks Gary, pity you dont live in the NI. :)

1247936 2011-12-10 11:03:00 I'm no expert Beet but I don't think laying new vinyl or floor tiles/strips over existing old vinyl (linoleum) is a good idea. Of course it might work, just be aware its not recommended. Winston001 (3612)
1247937 2011-12-10 18:45:00 No Beetle, you can't lay lino over the old stuff.

It's not that bad stripping it. You need a smooth surface - regardless of what material you use on the floor.

As for the fake wood, I'd run a mile from it. It looks tacky and it lifts after a while and looks like ****. Actually it looks like **** before that too.

1247938 2011-12-10 19:25:00 As an ex carpet retailer from Levin, I would suggest you ask the shop to advise you, that is their job. Cicero (40)
1247939 2011-12-10 22:52:00 We had these professionally laid for us in our old house. Great product. People would often ask us how much we paid for wooden flooring or say something like "Wow that floor looks great! Bet it cost a lot".

It doesn't lift if it's laid properly and it actually looks really nice.

Basically it's just vinyl tiles made to look like floorboards. If you do go this way, buy some extra ones, so that if one gets damaged you can replace it. Unlike standard vinyl where you would have to replace the whole thing or cut out a nasty looking patch to fix any damage.

1247940 2011-12-10 23:08:00 That fake wood looks good when installed properly, and really really bad when its not.

We had some installed in our house, its not as good as real floor boards but its the next best thing.

Cheapskates in town has the entire shop floor done with it if you wanted to see the finished product.

1247941 2011-12-10 23:26:00 Thanks guys.
This lino i have on my lounge floor was done when adam was a cowboy and is a lovely yellow colour, it has no visible problems as in damage except where i spilt or dripped paint by accident. it has a slight rough edge where the carpet wood edging things were, but other wise reall tidy. to rip up a whole house of lino, seems an absolute mission, only my bedroom has carpet the rest of the house has this old lino, of varying colours....... black, yello and grey with red streaks. none of it looks good enough to leave as it is. it is on concrete floor.

The wood slat did you buy it from the carpet shop? or a hardware store like mega?
and can you varnish it / polyurethane it to make it more durable?

I have kids and i have dogs so i want ti to last while we live here and not look horid by the time the house sells.........sometime next year hopefully.
Might have to go shopping at cheapskates for no particular reason... :D
thanks

1247942 2011-12-10 23:34:00 I wouldn't let dogs run around on it....

That aside, if I were doing it just to sell then I'd just lay cheap carpet over the lino and be done with it.
