9709 2001-03-08 06:32:00 AMD processors are fully compatible with all software
-that incompatibility thing is years old. Price/performance wise AMD are winning at the moment, you may pay more for your motherboard, but the saving in CPU price makes up for it. Performance-wise it depends on which benchmark or web page you are reading as to whether intel or AMD is faster. But hey, stack a 4 way Intel Xeon system against any offering from AMD and see who wins! :) If you're a student go for the AMD. I personally like Intel still however.

9710 2001-03-08 08:20:00 Personally I think AMD are better. Cheaper, and better performance in most areas make up for what some people call 'heat problems', though with any decent HSF there is no problem. If you are looking for good performance on a budget, AMD Duron's thrash the pants off Celeron's and are cheaper, while at the high end AMD's Thunderbird CPUs outclass Intel's Pentium 4 chip for a fraction of the cost. Some people still hold on to Intel's past, but many also see that the future is balanced in the hands of AMD. if they continue along their present path, Intel will shortly be left behind in both the budget and performance realms. Currently running an AMD Duron 700, it gives very similar performance to a P3 1GHz in, well, just about everything, for $1500 less. Sure, if you're rich go for dual or even quad P3 or P4 chips, but most of us can't afford that ;) Guest (0)
