9634 2001-03-06 10:20:00 I have seen a number of expert magazine articles that suggest setting the modem speed to twice the rate of the modem installed. i.e. 112K for a 56k modem. Indeed I have successfully done this for long periods of time.

Now the Clear Net helpdesk tell me that this is unwise and to set it exactly to the modem's rated speed. Is this something unique to Clear's setup/ or are they wrong?

9635 2001-03-06 11:06:00 yes and no. if your lines are PERFECT max out all the settings. however if the lines are not set your speed and other settings to match the lines. slowing down the modem to match the lines will not make it fast but more steady, less errors, reconnects or isp dissconnections. 9637 2001-03-08 07:39:00 Hello Hugh, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with tr, I feel compelled to scotch the myth that as an end user we can exercise any control over the speed that data passes between our modems and an ISP's modem other than the decision to buy a 56k modem rather than one of lesser speed. The speed setting you are talking about is the DTE speed which is the speed at which your computer talks to your modem and does not effect in any way the speed of data on the telephone line between modems. This speed known as the DCE speed is negotiated between modems in all that noise that goes on when you connect. If you have a 56k modem it will request a 56k connection speed but chances are that the best your isp will respond with is somewhere between 45 and 52k. This can be further reduced by the modem if it detects that the line quality is not good and it has to repeat a significant number of transfers. Windows 98se keeps a log file of the connection process and it can be clearly seen on mine at least that although my modem allways requests a 56k connection the best I ever get is 46K and you can see that this is set by the ISP. When you double click on the dialup icon on your task bar and it says you are connected at 112k it is talking about DTE speed between your computer and YOUR modem. Most Pci Win modems report this as connection speed, but its not.See if you can find a log file on your system I think win 98 writes one anyway but I seem to remember Win 95 you had to set it on in modem properties the file name will be 'modem name'.log.
Hope this helps PC.

9638 2001-03-08 10:22:00 sounds good in theory but not in practice. you can change the speed between modeum and isp. a mate had bad noise problems. with it set on 56k the isp home page wouldn't even load before it would drop out. 38 was better but end up writing in extra settings to run it at 31. actual download speeds were tested off a known server to test each change we made.
now to confuse the issue, we have screen shots of people down loading at a constant 17kps as oppossed to max of 5.6kps. any ideas?

9639 2001-03-09 06:59:00 Hi Peter,
Thanks for a very well worded explanation. What makes it difficult is when every second helpdesk consultant contradicts the previous one!

As it turns out [again] after many changes of settings guided by my ISP helpdesk, my registry got confused. Everything was put right again by restoring a three day old registry file.
Cheers,
Hugh
