9613 2001-03-06 05:14:00 I am 'in discussion' with the retailer of a PC on my regarding a problem with rebooting. Every so often the computer shuts down and restarts without warning. He says it is software related, I say hardware.

The computer is an FC1 Series Flex ATX with a CP810E-FL motherboard and a Celeron 667. It is running Win98, Office 97 & Outlook 98. It is hooked up on a WinNT network, and also has a Compaq Aero PDA connected via COM1. It also has an internal Motorola modem for faxes.
Until recently it also ran Norton Antivirus 5 and Utilities 3, but I removed them as part of my troubleshooting.

The Win98 power saving options have the monitor power off after 1hr but the HDD stays on. The computer gets it power through a UPS, so that rules out power surges...

Can anybody think of anything I may be overlooking on the software side that may cause this problem?

9615 2001-03-06 07:25:00 I had the same sort of problem .AAMOF I have send this sort of message now FOUR times in the last two days (to different lists). In my case it was the video card what caused the problem. It probably had a problem with the memory. Replaced it and everything works fine now.
(on the video card we found a piece of a rubberband used inside the comp.case to hold the wires or something . we ( I) strongly believe that this was causing the problem , maybe shortcutted it or something)
Hope this helps

9616 2001-03-06 22:04:00 Hi, does it do a windows restart, or does it simply reboot like the reset button has been pressed? If windows shuts down and restarts then I'd pick software as the culprit. If it just restarts a la reset button style, I'd pick hardware.
I'd target the video card as it often can cause sudden reboots like this.
