9939 2001-03-13 05:45:00 Dear PC World,

I have a home network with 5 PC's, one being a dedicated internet server with Wingate v4.2. My computers IP's are static, and i have default gateways to 192.168.1.2x (my proxy server)
The Wingate is setup to dial up automatically when ever a computer either logs into ICQ, loads IE Explorer, signs into MSN messenger and disconnect after 180 secs of inactivity. The problem i am having is that my computer has a lot of other software that unknown to me sends a DNS lookup to the proxy, and of course it dials up and dad has a blue fit because no-one can get thru, or when he tries to make a call the internet is connected. I share his view, it is infuriating when the internet dials up for a DNS lookup for www.microsoft.com, or www.webenhace.com or just stupid programs which i wish i could somehow control what the internet dials up for. Like some dumb programs like MusicMatch, Media player have no access to the modem (dialer) and the only programs that can even REQUEST a DNS, or SOCKS connect are say, IE, Norton AV, MSN, ICQ and maybe Napster. I have the Wingate internet client installed, but the dialup monitor is just a blank dialog box!
Sorry if that didn't make sense, but the bottom line is that i cant afford to have this dialing up because some unknown program decides it wants an update.
I have had a look thru wingate settings, but i can only find the page which tells the proxy NOT to dial for certain addresses.
This is no help, cause there seem to be endless DNS lookups! Is there any program to monitor WHAT and WHERE all outgoing data is going?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i will lose my internet proxy if this problem continues.

9940 2001-03-18 16:34:00 To use a different IP or DNS address for a Dial-Up Networking connection

In the Dial-Up Networking window, click the icon for the connection to which you want to assign a new IP or DNS address.
On the File menu, click Properties.
Click the Server Types tab, and then click TCP/IP Settings.
To assign a new IP address, click Specify an IP address.
In IP address, type the new IP address.
To assign a new DNS address, click Specify name server address.
In Primary DNS, type the new DNS address.

Notes

This setting is useful if you have more than one Internet account and cannot use the same IP address for all of them.
If you click Server assigned IP address or Server assigned name server addresses, Dial-Up Networking uses the default TCP/IP address information for this connection, as specified in the Network Properties dialog box in Control Panel.
