| 9920 | 2001-03-12 22:51:00 | I installed the All Icons file from the latest PC World CD. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any software included with it that enables me to use the ICL files that this installed. Is that the catch with these 'free' icons? I have to buy something to get at them, maybe? I'm using Windows 2000. |

I'm not sure how Windows 2000 works because i haven't used it myself, but for example, when you change your recycle bin/my computer icons (by going into 'control panel', 'display properties', then the 'effects' tab in Win98) you should be able to click on 'change icon' then 'browse' and go to the all-icons directory and view the ICL files. This way can be a pain though, so you might want to find some software that will make the job easier - and not all of them cost money. |

All Files makes the ICL files show up and then I can select them and pick an icon. As you say, a bit fiddly. I'll have to have a look at something that will allow me to extract the ICOs from them. For free sounds good. |

With most shortcuts there will be a Change Icon button; if you click on this button, the next dialog will give you a browse option which will search, by default, for ICL files. Selecting the icl file will result in the contents being displayed from which you can make your choice. You only need tools like Icon Editors or Resource Managers if you are wanting to extract the individual icons or create new icons and icl files. Enjoy. |

I tried all the other settings under Files of Type (which included Libraries) but the only one that showed me the .ICL files was 'All Files'. The Libraries one showed me .DLLs. Is this something peculiar to Windows 2000, maybe? |
