9887 2001-03-12 10:31:00 I have just put together a 486/100 with a cdrom drive slaved with Connor hdd on primary ide controller (I/O card). Problem is the cursor blinks into an hourglass and hdd light comes on every 3 seconds.

I have been told that some older cdrom drives (mine is Stingray 8422 8x spd)are incompatible with hdd's on a primary controller. Unfortunately the motherboard doesn't have IDE connections.

Here's the rub - this cursor problem disappears when I open the cdrom drawer.

Have no problems with rest of system, running Win 98 and using cdrom drivers from the manufacturers website.

No conflicts shown in Device Manager.
Any help much appreciated.

9888 2001-03-12 12:26:00 Try looking to see if your Sound Card has an Eide connector on it, most Sound Cards of 486 vintage have this function.

9889 2001-03-13 01:34:00 can i recommend an ESS sound card which has a complementary EIDE socket.(Approx $50)
connect your CD to this and leave the secondary plug free for another HARD DRIVE.
