9892 2001-03-12 08:21:00 We've had our Hewlett Packard Pavillion 6605 just over a year now, and really have had nothing but problems right from the start. To cut a long story short, the CPU itself has been repaired 4 times due to various hardware and/or software problems, and the actual CPU itself has been totally replaced twice. Now, we have just been given a brand new replacement from HP, a 6701 series with Windows ME. It has so far crashed more times in a week than than our old one did in a month! The whole thing is so unstable I dont know which technical support to contact, HP, or Microsoft. It's been so frustrating, I feel like setting the entire house on fire and watching it all go up! };-\ Guest (0)
9893 2001-03-12 08:44:00 Well, the curse of a supermarket computer. I too have a similar computer from HP. Firstly ring them, they are pretty good with problems, do not ring microsaft as they will tell you to ring HP. I found that the best way to correct these problems was to update all the software and get a programme that will repair the odd things that your computer will do. Nortans sytem works 99 works well.

If all eles fails qoute the consumer garantees act of 93 or when ever it was

9894 2001-03-12 09:07:00 are you sure you are not suffering from power surges and brownouts? Guest (0)
9895 2001-03-12 20:45:00 I recently purchased a surge/spike suppressor, so I'll see if that makes a difference. Do power surges actually cause crashes? Guest (0)
9896 2001-03-12 20:53:00 Thanks for the advice. I am begining to hear the scary stories about HP computers, but I've also heard and read that Win Me is not that great either. I have been ringing HP and they have been very good, but I dont like to bother them every 10 minutes, but I suppose they get alot of that. Guest (0)
9897 2001-03-12 23:57:00 Hi, I can't stand HP, I really pity my friend who bought a new P3 prior to becoming computer literate. Only to discover later that it didn't have an AGP slot.

His machine crashed a lot too, but 50% of the problems were corrected by removing the 30!! or so apps that load at start up in the default HP configuration. We finally got it fully stable by figuring out the real manufacturers of the components before HP rebadged them, getting the drivers directly from their sites and installing W2K on the thing. It's particularily irratating as HP sill havn't release any W2K drivers for his machine even now, despite the fact that the OEMs have written the drivers. HP are just too lazy to post them on their Website.

9898 2001-03-13 03:53:00 Hmmm. I'm beginning to dislike HP as well even though their technical helpline is great. It needs to be! Talking to the chaps at HP New Zealand, I was talked through the unchecking of the startup options in msconfig but I still feel there is a way to go yet as I am still crashing like crazy. I welcome any advice since I am still reletively new to computers. Guest (0)
