| 10080 | 2001-03-16 13:21:00 | Hello Bob, ...short of downloading a small utility to scrub your hard drive, you may like to try the following: (a) Go: Start > Find > Files or Folders. In the 'Named' enter C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. Click 'C:Drive' (or where your Internet cache is) and then 'Find Now'. There you will find those 1200 files which you can safely delete. (b) You will still be left with an 'Index.dat' file which could be anything up to and over 1,000 kb in size. It contains a record of all the sites you have ever visited on the Internet/Web. You cannot delete this file but it can be safely emptied (or cut down in size at least) by the following method and which presumes you are using Internet Explorer 5 or higher: Go: Start > Shut Down > then click Restart in MS-DOS mode > then OK. At the DOS prompt type: 'del c\:windows\tempor~1\content.ie5\index.dat' (without the quotation marks) Press <enter> and then restart your PC. (c) If you wish to get serious about cleaning out the garbage - use the same method as in (a) above and enter any of the following (one at a time and EXACTLY as typed) into the 'find' function. These files can safely be removed - and don't be surprised should you find in excess of 1000 of them, although less than 100 is more common: *.~* ~*.* *.??~ *.--- *.tmp *._mp *.old *.bak *.syd *.chk *.gid mscreate.dir O???????.nch *.tmp,~*.* You may like to cut and paste these into a new text document and save them in your documents for future reference. (d) If all of that seems like too much work, there are a number of free utilities which will do some or all of the above. I use those which are available at this site: www.langa.com ...good luck. |

| 10081 | 2001-03-16 13:28:00 | ...oops, the file names for cleaning out the garbage have not displayed correctly on the page above. I will repeat them and place a // between each one, as follows: *.~* ~*.* // *.??~ // *.--- // *.tmp // *._mp // *.old // *.bak // *.syd // *.chk // *.gid // mscreate.dir // O???????.nch // C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files // *.tmp,~*.* // Cheers !!! |

| 10082 | 2001-03-16 13:47:00 | ...Sorry Bob !!! This posting has turned into a bit of a mess. *DON'T* use the file names I've given you in item (c) above: for some reason I am unable to make them display correctly - and to use a couple of them as shown would cause disaster (!!!). However, the advice as in (a) (b) and (d) stands. |
