10050 2001-03-15 09:25:00 I have a new Athlon 900 computer with a 20 GB HDD which the BIOS confirm. I first loaded DOS 6.22 but when I pressed DIR it only showed 2.146 GB. I subsequently loaded Windows ME which also showed only 2 GB.
Is this a HDD problem or BIOS?

10051 2001-03-15 09:56:00 If you can get to a command prompt in windows me, try running fdisk. If you can't I think you get fdisk as part of a win98 startup disk, so you might have to boot off one. I think dos 6.22 only supported fat16, limiting the maximum partition size, hence your small partition. Guest (0)
10052 2001-03-15 12:15:00 From what i understand, DOS will only recognise a hard disk partition to a maximum size of 2GB on a Fat 16 partition.

It sounds as though your partition is formatted this way, in which the only way out, is to reformat to Fat 32, and reinstall the OS.

Either use FDisk which can be somwhat of a chore, or use a third party utility such as Partition Magic, which makes the process a breeze.

10053 2001-03-19 07:32:00 Thanks Paul for your help, you pointed me in the right direction.

I found out from Microsoft that the DOS I was using was FAT16 and I required FAT32.Using the DOS6.22 I had I created the 2GB DOS partition and then loaded ME to the point where I could create a Startup Disc which I used to create the large partition I required and install my CD driver.
