10259 2001-03-20 09:36:00 With seemingly no reason I can no longer drag or move files from folder to folder nor cut, copy and paste files. I get the response 'Fatal Error. Unable to create an instance at required object:Server Admin'. I hit OK and get 'Exporer. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down(etc)'. I have to click CLOSE and usually what happens then is my system tray empties of icons and the laterally bouncing arrow points to START. I end up rebooting. My OS is Win 95B. Guest (0)
10260 2001-03-20 10:17:00 An instance is a virtual occurrence of a process and is jargon for something that is happening in the OS that is the focus of that process.

if you are dragging a file from one folder to another, the original file is one intance, and the copied file is another intance. Confused? I'm not surprised.

You could think of instances as examples. I have one example here, and another instance over there...that sort of thing.

If you double-click a program icon and the program starts, and you double-click the icon again and another copy of the program runs, then, in computer-speak, you have two instances of the program in memory.

That doesn't have much to do with your problem however. The error message hints at two possibilities. A corrupted registry or a virus. The former can be a pain to fix and may be better dealt with by re-installing Windows. The latter needs the services of a good antivirus, like McAfee or Symantec (Norton).

I'd try booting from your rescue disk and attempting to re-install. I don't know how many times I've had to do that, but it has helped in most 'instances', if you'll pardon the pun.

10261 2001-03-21 00:22:00 Took me ages to sort this problem out. Finally happened to me so I had to. (happens on the desktop and in Apps?) If so its Internet Explorer. Don't know why but completely remove it then upgrade to a new version if you can. Guest (0)
10262 2001-03-21 11:58:00 Thanks David,
Interesting. I have a corrupt IE and cannot update nor replace nor remove. It is in a loop. It is v5.5 but is detected as v5.0. Hence I am told I need updates which cannot install because I already have them, meanwhile reinstallation of v5.5 fails because a previous installation failed. LOOP!!!
I have asked for help on this for four months with no joy. I need to know what to delete or alter in Registry. Any ideas? Thanks. Andrew

10263 2001-03-21 12:14:00 Thanks, Andy.
Please see my response to David.
Also, nil virus activity here... I am religious with Nortons AV, a firewall, cookie and ad snoopers and in my excruciating PC career (17 years worth)I've reloaded OS's many times in frustration. I agree that my registry is probably corrupt but damned if I know where. I have asked in forums HOW DO YOU TOTALLY UNINSTALL Int Exp IF IT TELLS YOU IT IS NOT INSTALLED IN THE FIRST PLACE? (Deafening silence). The answer must be in Registry. But where???? I need to know how to purge it to get a new, clean installation. I do not want to reformat my hard drive when a dozen keystrokes could achieve the same. Any thoughts please. Thanks, Andrew

10264 2001-03-22 01:56:00 Hi Andrew, have you read Q257234 titled 'how to uninstall IE5.5' on the MS knowledge base? It refers to several other papers which also may help.
Good luck PC

10265 2001-03-23 05:31:00 Thanks, will have a look.
My problem is solved. Yesterday my IE failed with a 'FATAL ERROR' and I sent the automated report to MS. I assume they did something, although they did not say so. Before attacking Registry (yet again) I thought I would try reinstalling IE5.5 (yet again). It f---g worked!!! I just about fell off my chair. Months of anguish fixed in 5 minutes. So, as I understand it, WinExp and IntExp share common files and these include those needed for file management. If IE is corrupt then WinExp is corrupt and file management is corrupt. I now have a clean IE5.5 and everything is back to normal. Thanks, Andrew
