| 10409 | 2001-03-25 02:08:00 | Making changes in Mandrake Lilo Grub To have Win 98 as default I found on reboot of my computer that DMI Data Pool could not boot Win 98. I could use Mandarke 7.2 boot disk to try and corredt the error but so far I am unable to reboot win 98 How can the DMI data pool be reconfigured to have Win98 boot as normal. What is DMI data Pool? Ant solution other than a reformat dive 1 that has all my win98 programs still on it but unable to get at. Regards Maurice |

If you can boot into Safe Mode and Windows loads alright in that environment, there are a few things you can try. If you can't boot into Safe Mode realistically it is going to be a lot quicker and easier just to reformat and start again. If you have access to another PC you should be able to attach your HD as a slave and access any stuff you wish to keep that way. By the way DMI stands for 'Desktop Management Interface' you can also try this >> Try booting with any bootable disk of the same operating system, wth the sys program on the disk. Type ... sys A: C: <enter> ...to transfer the system files from the bootable floppy disk to the hard drive As a last resort you can boot up with a bootable floppy disk, and if it has the fdisk file on it type Fdisk /mbr and press Enter. This replaces the boot files. but should be tried after you have recovered what data you need and just before you resort to reformatting. Any other queries repost Alan |

| 10411 | 2001-03-27 03:54:00 | Hi Alan Thank you for the reply, Have done FDSK and reformt Master HDD. Drive 2 has Mandrake 7.2 installed. Have discovered that if I remove slave drive from setup and reboot system Windows 98 will boot. As soon as drive 2 is added can not boot win98. DMI loads LI and system halts. So it would seem that Mandrake has control of a boot sector will try to regain both systems by reformating drive 2 and see if the on reboot I have a menu for Win 98 and Linux. Great experince in the correct use of software instllation. Regards Maurice |
