10441 2001-03-26 02:27:00 Is it possible to have email facilities without having internet access? My kids are spending too much time on the net, and I'd like to get rid of it (heresy!!)but retain email access. Short of using a password to prevent them going on, can I do this and, if so, how? You do need some sort of internet account to access your email, so getting rid of it is not exactly an option - and if your email address is with your ISP, your going to have to stay with them to keep it or get a brand new one.
Depending on the ISP your with you could change your account to a lower useage plan, saving you money and if your kids still spend too much time on the internet make them pay the extra hours.. they'll soon get the hint!! :)

Hope this helps.

10443 2001-03-26 04:18:00 Go for a Hotmail email www.hotmail.com or mail.com address and dump your ISP but if you want to check your email could use a internet cafe.

The kids must be learning something I wouldn't like to see them miss out on the next major technology wave.

10444 2001-03-26 04:26:00 It's not a matter of them learning or not learning off the net - they ain't learning their homework, 'cos Diablo on-line is more fun! Ah, the trials of working parents...
Thanks for the response. I've discovered an outfit called Juno (www.juno.com) who have free software for email without ISP's, so I might give that a whack...

10445 2001-03-27 03:04:00 Hi Dave,
no easy solution unless you can be bothered setting up a firewall. Basically you need to prohibit connections on certain ports. Or allow only the two necessary for e-mail transmission and receipt. I haven't used any of the free firewalls like Zonealarm etc, but they should allow you to set port restrictions. Email will require port 110 for mail download and port 25 for mail upload. You may need others for authentication, don't know for sure, but you can but try.
Alternatively, you can ban diablo's port and any other games they play only, allowing web, email, icq etc through. The other issue is stopping the kids undoing all your work, perhaps the firewall software will support passwords and security too. Others on this site may be able to contribute more.
good luck, if you can do it you'll learn a lot.

10446 2001-03-30 13:23:00 Have a look on xtra's home page. One of the programs that they offer is called Cyberpatrol, of which you can set up to control the amount of time spent online, and the sites that can be viewed.

I have tried this, once the parameters are set, it will block access to the children, after a specified time frame, however you can bypass this by using a password.
