10602 2001-03-29 00:54:00 My Partner has been trying to send me 3MB files compressed down using Winzip ver 5 to about 600KB as email attachments.

The emails come through OK but the attachments seem to be corrupted and appear as some form of text file, not a Winzip file. The attached files have been check as being properly compressed by unzipping them at the sender's end.The received size is the same as the compressed Zip file but I am unable to open these using Winzip and the icon on the file is not the usual one for Winzip files.

The sender is using Win98 and Outlook Express as the email program. Getting very frustrated

10603 2001-03-29 08:42:00 Gavin, I don't like askng this, but do you have winzip on your computer? You will only be able to unzip the files with a winzip program.Hope this helps Guest (0)
10604 2001-03-29 08:56:00 Tim,
yes Winzip is on both machines. The incomming mail message shows the attached file as being something other than a Winzip file, The attachment Icon is the Notepad Icon not the usual Winzip icon.

10606 2001-03-29 20:33:00 Hi Gavin, try this link for FAQs about winzip and email. www.winzip.com Regards PC Guest (0)
10607 2001-03-29 21:00:00 The problem could be one of incorrect encoding/decoding of the .zip file for transmission as an attachment. I dont use Outlook Express, but most e-mail programs have options for coding, eg Mime, UUE, etc.
Check on both computers in the set-up options that you both have the Mime coding option set.
This used to be a problem in the days of DOS based e-mail when different protocols were around.

10608 2001-03-31 05:56:00 hi again Gavin, Just a thought, try sending a message to yourself with a zipfile attached and get your partner to do the same then at least you will know which end is causing the problem unless neither of them work.
regards PC
