1271670 2012-04-24 08:51:00 Hey all, built a computer for someone last week and it has repeatly given problems which I can only think must be either a hard drive issue or power issue.

On about 25% of boots it first doesnt detect the hard drive, give it a reset and shes back and running. Other issue is waking up from sleep gives a windows did not shut down properly, enter safe mode, start normally etc.

Seagate 1tb hard drive, enermax psu and windows 7 pro

Any ideas?

1271671 2012-04-24 08:56:00 Whats the model of the hdd?? If its the ST31000528AS. Update its firmware, its up to CC49. I would read the manual and see if its on the right SATA port. Since, on some mobos, certain ports are for optical devices only. Whats the brand/model of the mobo? Speedy Gonzales (78)

1271674 2012-04-24 09:21:00 No it's not cos I have nothing but trouble with it breaking windows installations in the past. I update manually as required hueybot3000 (3646)
1271675 2012-04-24 09:29:00 No it's not cos I have nothing but trouble with it breaking windows installations in the past. I update manually as required Slightly drifting abit, but still on topic - If its only a week old, is it a NEW OEM OS ? Reason I'm asking is because its very very hard to buy a OEM DVD these days that doesn't have SP1 already installed. If its a new PC then it should also have a new OS.

What does the event and reliability history logs say ?

Do some basic trouble shooting / Also while not always done was the system actually "burnt in" or tested before the person received it after you built it ? Any computer have faulty parts from being built.

1271676 2012-04-24 09:31:00 Disk is mine, and key came off a shagged lappy that I had. Event viewer has listed critical errors that match the time of issues.

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Labelled "kernel-power"

1271677 2012-04-24 09:39:00 You may have a faulty component someplace -- may be a case of swapping out parts till its found,Or running a burn in test to push it to breaking point.

BTW -- the piece you mentioned about the key -- tisk tisk -- thats illegal.
