1271485 2012-04-23 22:55:00 I have the Student Professional pack that allows the program to be used on three computers.

MS is able to check when the three have been utilized and therefore wont validate another install.

What I want to know is how they check if you uninstall an installtion from a PC and therefore will then be allowed another reinstall onto another PC.

Can anyone advise please?

1271487 2012-04-23 23:13:00 You should be able to do phone activation, and advise them it has been uninstalled from one device. If it's been quite a while since the earliest activation, it'll probably work automatically anyway.

I'm so confused what product you're talking about though :/

1271488 2012-04-23 23:16:00 They cant tell if you have uninstalled it from a PC, but they do record how many times its been activated.

If you have uninstalled it, and wise to install it again on another PC, then you simply call them tell them its been uninstalled , destroyed what ever has happened to it and they manually activate it.

1271489 2012-04-24 07:46:00 I suspect they collect some info whenever downloading Office updates. This would present another opportunity, besides activation, to try to track how many copies are actually getting used.

If they were really cunning pressing F1 from within Office would also see them collecting info while serving up the online help... but that's just my distrust of MS coming to the fore. Tell me I'm being silly and paranoid.

I have found their Helpline very friendly re this. I've contacted them twice (years apart because i could not remember from 1st time) to check this.
