1271129 2012-04-22 02:07:00 First a message came up when my computer was working saying delayed write error with sound of the sound of the put in drive remove drive, the sound when you put in a USB then when you take it out. So I rebooted and now it won't get past the windows XP loading part, then just a black screen! The monitor shows there is a signal because of the green light.
Do you people have any advice on what to do?? :annoyed::dogeye:

1271133 2012-04-22 02:37:00 I'm thinking like Speedy here, do some thorough checks on your HDD, also check for any data corruption which may also be a sign. Iantech (16386)
1271134 2012-04-22 02:38:00 How do I check for data corruption?? ChazTheGeek (16619)
1271135 2012-04-22 02:54:00 Ok I checked the BIOS and strangely enough the primary HDD was switched to secondary HDD so no wonder it wasn't booting. I didn't change anything in the BIOS before hand so I don't know how it happened. All good (at the moment) and booted normally. ChazTheGeek (16619)
1271136 2012-04-22 03:44:00 Open up a command window and type in CHKDSK and hit Enter, let it run, see if it reports any errors, if it does run CHKDSK /F. I may not allow you to run the Fix command while Windows is in use and may ask you if you want to run a check on next boot, say Yes (Y) and reboot, it will restart, run a disk check and once finished it will reboot again and load up normally or continue to load, depending on any changes it needs to corrent. (sorry, I dont have an XP box here to varify this at the moment, so going from memory (which isnt always that good!!)). Someone will corrent me if I am wrong.

Below is an example of a recent check I did on a clients HDD. The drive wouldnt boot at all on the computer, taking it out and slaving it onto my system (as Drive O you can see), my computer said the file system was RAW and was unreadable and wanted to reformat the drive. But running first a check and then a fix made it totally readable again and the client lost no data. While not always sucessful, CHKDSK can be a very useful tool and in my opinion often under utilised and often replaced by 3rd party software with a pretty GUI that doesnt work as well. As a Tech, it is a tool in your arsenal that you dont want to forget about. (Just saying this as you want to be a techie and may find it interesting). When you look at the attachments, you can see how screwed up this drive was that was preventing it from loading.

1271137 2012-04-22 03:54:00 Thanks Ian, I'll keep that one in mind. I have rebooted a couple of times to make sure that the system is stable. So far it has been positive.
Thanks for your help.

1271138 2012-04-22 07:24:00 Sounds to me like your primary (boot) drive was temporarily unavailable, hopefully due to a bad cable connection. At the reboot your BIOS failed to detect the drive, and consequently auto-configured your secondary HDD as the boot device.

Check that both ends of all cables are snugly in place, and firstly backup your boot drive ASAP, then subject it to a bunch of read/write tests.
Be prepared for the possibility that it may be about to die.
