1249027 2011-12-16 22:53:00 Hi,

I'm looking to get an Ipad2 (or another tablet) primarily for reading but for other stuff too.

I see a lot of things I'd like on Amazon's Kindle stores, I assume all of it is available for NZ? Could someone confirm this?
All of this would be readable on the iPad Kindle app?

I don't know where I could see what the iBook store offers... From a quick search I see a lot of "no/limited contect for NZ"... But most of those posts are from last year... Could someone confirm if it has been filled or tiny compared to Kindle?
Better yet is there a catalog or something I could browse though?

Thanks.

1249028 2011-12-16 23:11:00 I have a Sony Reader PRS T1 so I don't know whether this will help you or not. I have downloaded and installed Amazon Kindle for PC on my desktop PC, so I do all my exploring of the Amazon store that way. When I buy a book using Kindle on the PC, it downloads to my PC. Then I use Calibre with the appropriate plug ins to load the book onto my Sony Reader. I have had no problems paying for the books using my NZ Visa card.

I don't know if Calibre works with an iPad, but I assume that the iPad has some kind of software (iTunes?) that enables you to load books from your PC? The key will be the kind of format the book is in on your PC and whether iTunes will recognise it.

Just a suggestion - I have had a lot of help from the MobileReads forums. http://www.mobileread.com/ They have Kindle and Apple forums, so you may get a definitive answer there. I am sure your question has been asked before - MobileReads is a VERY active site.

1249029 2011-12-16 23:16:00 I should have also said that before buying the Sony Reader, I used my Samsung Galaxy S2 as an ebook reader (too small though). The Android app Kindle worked well on the Samsung Galaxy - I was able to buy and download books from Amazon onto the tablet. The Kindle app has a catalogue type menu to help you search - eg adult fiction, children's fiction etc etc - so you can browse through categories like that. Or you can search for author or title. I have since been able to transfer the books I bought via the Samsung to my Sony Reader, using Calibre. John H (8)
1249030 2011-12-16 23:27:00 The Kindle App works fine, have downloaded several books from Amazon

There should be a button in the top right corner of your iBook App bookshelf called "store." Go to iBooks don't go on the regular iTunes, it's not there.

Having said that if you update iTunes to the latest version you will see Books listed on the menu on the left side.

1249031 2011-12-16 23:37:00 John H: Thanks. Is reading on the Sony Reader significantly easier on the eyes than the S2 (ignoring size, of course)?

Safari: I downloaded iTunes before starting this thread and I don't see books anywhere. I can't really use the iBook app not having an iPad yet or is there one for PC?

(snip)

eInk = readable the same as a book. If you need light to read a book, you need light to read eInk.
S2 = you can read whether it is light or not, same as an iPad.

Other than that, and ignoring size, I prefer the eInk for reading. It really is just like a book. It is less glary, and much easier on the eyes.
The main disadvantage of eInk is if you want to use the browser on the Sony. In short, the browser is crap anyway, but the lack of colour makes it almost impossible to use. Secondly, I have some books that include maps with different colouring or shading. They are almost unreadable on eInk but are quite readable on the S2. You pays your money and takes your choice.

I was talking to the guy in the local GlobalPC store, and his opinion was that you should have both! Of course he would say that, wouldn't he? However, there is some sense to that. His advice was to get a cheaper tablet, and a good quality reader. I think I will do that - buy an Android tablet so that my wife and I have the choice of format depending upon what we want to read at the time. Let battle commence!

. I have just started to get familiar with Calibre . I think I have the necessary plug-ins . Is it just a matter of hitting the 'Convert' button or is it a bit
more complicated than that? .

It is that simple . DRM protected ones though, you need the PC based reader on teh same machine i think .

Then for ipad, look for a reader such as MegaReader or Stanza and these can download directly from the calibre media server - rather than having to transfer via itunes or email .

That did the trick. But there's nothing on there... Only free books... Shame, I would have thought they had better by now.

^^ Thanks again John.
