| 1248485 | 2011-12-14 00:53:00 | Just had a phone call from an Indian sounding gent. He said that computers in the area were slowing down and he would help me correct this. I guessed this was a scam but let him go on. He asked me to type EVENTVWR in the ...start...run. At this point i said I was happy with my computer and if he gave me his phone No. I could ring if I had a problem. He got agitated and kept saying loudly "NOT IF, WHEN" At this point I rang off. My? What does EVENTVWR do? |

Dont let then loose on the PC, when youre not there. They usually disable services, and they will also disable the write an event to the system log option. | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

| 1248492 | 2011-12-14 02:56:00 | My mother-in-law fell prey to this scam a week or so ago, despite having a very capable son and a gifted amateur of a son-in-law to help her when required. They managed to install an antiviris which I had never heard of (Techbuddha) and a PC optimisation program and walked away with eight hundred of her pension dollars!!! Needless to say, the antivirus has been uninstalled and replaced with MSSE, the optmisation program has been replaced and Malwarebytes Antimalware has done a scan and found nothing nasty. Mother-in-law has been suitably chastised and the bank advised to charge back the Visa payment. |

On the useful side, it can also be quite helpful in solving problems as there can be useful error messages etc logged in there. The skill comes from knowing how to understand them. |
