1271393 2012-04-23 21:47:00 Comodo personal firewall is probably the best freebie available, imo. You've gotta watch their website though they'll try and get you to buy the pro version :P

Zonealarm but I suspect it has probably got bloated now.

ZoneAlarm bounces back and forwards between decent and terrible with just about every version and patch.

ZA free is not really worth the price - might as well stick with Windows firewall. The pay-version of ZA is excellent though.

1271395 2012-04-23 22:21:00 Dont bother with 3rd party firewalls. They really just arnt needed.
Just stick with WIn firewall & the router. Who cares if it doesnt block outgoing, if the PC gets that badly infected , a 3rd party firewall wont be of much use anyway .

The best protection is a bit of common sense.

You are so wrong there. I have been on numerous PC's where a third party FW blocking outgoings has been plenty of use, mainly letting me know what to look for.

1271397 2012-04-24 04:59:00 A decent anti-virus will block malware, known bad sites etc. A NAT router will provide a normal household enough protection IMO, all those firewall applications just cause more trouble than it's worth. WarNox (8772)

The best protection is multi-layered protection. No single layer can always block everything. But the more layers you have the more likely you are to detect threats. But I do agree that common sense is the first line of defense.

I always have a firewall for outbound connections. In the unlikely event I did get a virus, I would prefer it was detected and blocked from sending any information outside. It's also another way of alerting you in case there is a virus, so you can actually do something about it.

1271400 2012-04-30 07:25:00 We use the Microsoft MSS as our only firewall is this enough? PJ

Soo...a lot of words spoken team, but I still don't know which freeware firewall to use. Naturally with any freeware version I will get prompts to purchse. A nuisance but acceptable. I would rather not have a firewall that keeps asking if I accspt etc. Any comments?

I have installed Spamfighter & it is catching all those Spams that are strings of letters & no proper From.. Maryann started to download Spamfighter onto her Toshiba W7, but it advised NOT as it "Could harm the computer" What gives? PJ

Comodo Firewall free version doesn't nag you to purchase. I don't know about the others as I haven't used them. Used to use Zone-Crash-Your-Machine-Alarm and before that, Norton.

That's just Windows 'catch-all' error message when it encounters you downloading a file that it doesn't recognise. It doesn't actually mean that the file is harmful. But since it doesn't know what it is, it says that it might be.

I've never heard of Spamfighter so have no idea if it's legit or not. If you've been using it you probably know already.

1271402 2012-04-30 10:32:00 I have used the free version Online Armour for a long time and found it OK. It asks a lot of questions to start with, and kicks in with updatea and new programs, but that just lets me know it doing its job. PPp (9511)
