2012-04-22 21:57:00 | I did some tests and my secondary drive has a bad block, what does that mean? | ChazTheGeek (16619) | |
2012-04-22 22:48:00 | It means theres a part of the disk that can't reliably read or write data, possibly due to a physical defect. It's not a good sign and can be the beginning of a drive failure. If it's new and under warranty contact your supplier and ask them what to do about it, a replacement may be in order. If it's not under warranty for now keep an eye on it, run a scan every few days and make sure no more errors are occuring. If the bad blocks increase the drive is probably on it's way out, if not it may just be a single defect. Also +1 on what paul said check all your drive cables are secure and in good condition. One point I'd like to mention, if you have errors occuring over multiple drives or get corrupted files on what you think are good drive, check the memory. All data passes through it and it can give the appearance of drive faults.

2012-04-22 23:27:00 | Dugi pretty much sums it up. Hopefully your drive now has that block marked as bad and will avoid writing any data to that location. For any data already in that location it may no longer be accessable although in many cases the drive will recovery any data and relocate it elsewhere. A HDD with a bad block or sector could (in most cases "will") eventually develop more and more bad areas and will become un-usable. There is no time frame on when this will be, it may last years with a bad block or it could develop more bad sectors at an increasing rate and last only a matter of months. To test your memory, I use memtest86 ( (it is bootable so make sure you boot to your CD drive on system startup). If you have faulty memory, some retailers/suppliers" target="_blank">www.memtest.org/) download the ISO, burn to CD and run. (it is bootable so make sure you boot to your CD drive on system startup). If you have faulty memory, some retailers wont replace it unless this test has been performed. Personally, for peace of mind, I would be looking at replacing the drive.

2012-04-23 00:04:00 | Ok thanks for letting me know. The secondary drive is only about 3 months old, I should be able to get a replacement. Is there somewhere I can send it other than Seagate itself because that's where I got it from...that was also a replacement drive. Go here to see the details : pressf1.pcworld.co.nz Do you people know where I could send it, instead of Seagate itself as it costs a lot to send ??? I'll back it up straight away! :help::badpc:

2012-04-23 00:54:00 | Can you post a pic like you did with that trademe drive you got in that other thread showing the drive label. Can you also post a screen shot of your drive result that shows bad sectors/blocks. Thanks.

2012-04-23 01:25:00 | I've already done a warranty check on Segate's website and the warranty has run out.:crying 3746 The secondary drive is the first one on the list (the Seagate drive) ----Here is the system report -----:stare: You will find the bad block under event log... I can't take a picture of the drive yet as it is backing up. If I did a screen shot of the report it would be too large. | 1271145 | 2012-04-23 02:13:00 | I've already done a warranty check on Segate's website and the warranty has run out Thats more than likely because the warranty runs from the date of the original drives purchase. Any drive that is replaced under warranty does not start with a new date. So if the original drive was say 35 months old , and the original warranty was for 3 years(36 months), then the replacement drive has only a warranty of 1 month. Sometimes you actually find the drives don't have bad blocks, they may just be reading wrong by what ever you are using to check. Did you actually try Seatools to check the drive ?

2012-04-23 02:31:00 | I am going to try Seatools. Windows said that the drive had a read/write error and could not be accessed. That was yesterday. It's fine at the moment. I need to connect my PC to internet so I can get Microsoft .net framework 4 for it to work. What does a .net framework do? Are Seagate drives known for failures?:illogical I heard of other bad experiences with other Seagate drives:groan:. If I can't fix my current drive I'll move to WD instead.

From MS the simple version of explaining .NET is an integral part of many applications running on Windows and provides common functionality for those applications to run. Which basically means people who write programs use .net Framework instead of having to write lines and lines of code. .Net supplies all the necessary functions and is freely available.
