1248681 2011-12-15 08:23:00 The Balcony was Carmen's place (Victoria Street?). I don't think she owned the Purple Onion did she? I remember someone else owning it, and by then it had a pretty bad reputation for alleged sly grogging to young kids. John H (8)
1248682 2011-12-15 09:00:00 Hey, were you there too? Remember the Purple Onion?

LL

What were you doing in the Purple Onion? lol

1248683 2011-12-18 18:41:00 :D Yep. And The Balcony as well.

Was it the purple onion Howard Morrison sung at,
That was Mercer St.

Sorry to say I was always embarrassed when Carmen acknowledged me on the st during the day.

1248686 2011-12-18 19:53:00 Mercer is at right angles to Willis. Parallel is Victoria St. Carmen had The Balcony nightclub at 57A Victoria, slightly north of the Dominion. I remember as a schoolboy in the mid 60's walking en-mass past the Purple Onion in Vivian with a teacher trying to stop any loitering by the photos in the window. PaulD (232)

B4 the balcony, she had another place in Victorian St.

On the ground floor.

Carmen had the International Coffee Lounge - at 86 Vivian Street. I am sure that was before she set up The Balcony. There was another coffee bar in that neck of the woods called the Mexicali (sp?) but I can't remember whether Carmen owned it.

The Mexicali was diagonal to the Empress Ballroom in Vivian St, Nick Smith treo was the resident band.
