1249462 2011-12-20 20:11:00 I'd say the majority of smokers who have commented in this thread have only done so because they don't like being pooled in with the few smokers that are anti-social about there habbit. I doubt that many members here would happily puff away in the faces of others. I smoke around my friends but they either smoke or have stated they don't mind so it's fine. Otherwise I will keep enough distance that smoke isn't steeling their air.

As for why I go outside to smoke. I think it's mostly habbit, there is very few places you can smoke inside. It's also nicer outside because you can get a bit of air at the same time. I'm a smoker and even I don't particuarly enjoy being in a box of smoke, depending on the particular blend of course :-)

1249464 2011-12-20 21:09:00 How long has tobacco and cigarettes been around for, did the Vikings or Romans or Chinese for example have tobacco I wonder, and what was the first guy thinking who rolled a bit of grass up and lit it anyway, I wonder how many other varieties of plants he rolled up and smoked before discovering the tobacco plant.

The Vikings might have since they were in America long before Columbus and co as were the Irish priests such as St Brendan

1249465 2011-12-20 21:50:00 Snuff used to be popular before cigarette smoking became the dominant use of tobacco. With the banning of smoking in pubs in European countries the practice of snuff has increased. Snuff is free of tar and harmful gases such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

I wonder if tobacco smokers will in the future resort to snuff.

In which case you could also argue that if smoking has been around so long, and the "obesity epidemic" is only in the most recent generations, it's also, unrelated ;)

They will probably find it is just as bad snorting snuff as smoking tobacco.
The sale of snuff is banned in NZ.

I agree it is just a case of eating too much and spending too much time sitting on their fat behinds.

It appears that snuff is banned from sale in New Zealand but can be imported for personal use. Makes little sense to ban a less dangerous product and yet allow more dangerous smokable cigarette and tobacco products to be sold legally.

Sale of (less dangerous) snuff is banned; only
import for personal use is permitted.

1249471 2011-12-21 06:12:00 Isnt there a limit or something on the tobacco plants you can grow though, like you are only allowed to grow a few for personal use or something, I dont think you can grow it to sell (some law against it?) or is it simply a case of getting some sort of licence to sell tobacco such as you do for alcohol?
I remember visiting Nelson as a we fella and seeing rows and rows of tobacco, was it the Rothmans company I think? If it grows in Nelson, does anybody still grow it up there or tried to grow it?
