1271619 2012-04-24 07:12:00 Just upgraded the firmware of the SPA3102 and then it died about 20 minutes later. No power at all. >_<

Had it working quite well with Asterisk a long while ago but haven't used it for ages. I thought I will upgrade the firmware before tinkering with it but appears that was a waste of time. It was not the simplest to configure to start with, since this one is almost 4 years old, there must be some better alternatives on the market now?

Anyone has any recommendations?

1271620 2012-04-24 08:27:00 Nup those SPA3102's are still pretty highly regarded. There's some Grandstream Handytone devices but they're nowhere near as nice.

No power to it at all? How'd you manage that one?

1271621 2012-04-24 10:56:00 Been using a PAP2T for years but had some disconnection troubles - eventually after lots of testing and mucking around Xnet suggested a new VoIP box. I got a Cisco SPA122 from Nicegear here in Timaru (nicegear.co.nz). Seems to have corrected the problems. johnd (85)
1271622 2012-04-24 16:51:00 Does the SPA122 support taking an analog line and passing it through to the likes of Asterisk, as the SPA3102 does? Chilling_Silence (9)

I'm not really sure but this quote is from the Nicegear web site "the Cisco SPA122 can be used with residential, home-office, and small business VoIP service offerings, including full-featured hosted or open source IP PBX environments".

I have no idea what happened. It was working fine sitting on my desk, the web interface came up ok after the firmware upgrade. I can see the new firmware version shown, set the date and time etc. rebooted couple of times and it seems fine. Walked away for 20 minutes or so, came back and no lights on, dead as a door nail. It is connected to a double plug where the ADSL router is on, that is still working, so its not the power socket. Tried it in a different power socket in a different room, no lights at all. >_<

I did notice the unit was a bit warm on the top even though it has only been on for a short while. It is close to 4 years old but has only really been used for 2 months and 1 month stretch when we were overseas, it was not even plugged in for the rest of the last 4 years. Who knows, its time to replace it anyway, wouldn't want it to die when I am away and actually need it.

So it is still highly regarded after being on the market for 4 years? Some of the stuff I read on the InterWeb seem to say otherwise?
There must have been some advances in this field in the past 4 years, surely?

According to this link ... www.shopping.com
The SPA122 is only USD $7 cheaper ($57 vs $64) than the SPA3102.

The Cisco SPA122 ATA with Router combines VoIP services with an internal router for LAN connectivity. Easy to install and use, it works over an IP network to connect analog phones and fax machines to a VoIP service provider and provides support for additional LAN connections. The Cisco SPA122 includes two standard telephone ports to connect existing analog phones or fax machines to a VoIP service provider.

-----------------------------

The SPA3102 delivers clear, high-quality voice communication in diverse network conditions. Excellent voice quality in a demanding IP network is consistently achieved via the advanced implementation of standard voice coding algorithms. The SPA3102 is interoperable with common telephony equipment like voicemail, Fax, PBX, and interactive voice response systems.

-----------------------------

In a quick glance at the comparison, can only see couple of differences, the SPA122 lacks DHCP server and Encryption (?)

The SPA3102 has two telephone ports, one is for the analog phone, the other connects to the phone line. Not sure if it is different to the ports on the SPA122 ... ?

"The Cisco SPA122 ATA with Router includes two standard telephone ports, each with an independent phone number, for use with fax machines or analog phone devices. It also features one fast Ethernet WAN port, and one fast Ethernet LAN port for a local home or business network connection."

I tried a different power adapter (5V 1A) but still no lights, so the SPA3102 is definitely DEAD. I will have to order a new one tomorrow then. >_<

By the way, in my search on the InterWeb regarding the SPA3102, I stumbled across 3CX (www.3cx.com), a Windows based PBX.
Looks easier than Asterisk, any one has any experience with that in comparison to Asterisk?

I downloaded the phone App for 3CX on my Android phones and it worked very well within the LAN here. Took a few minutes to figure out how to set up the phone and extension in 3CX, getting the second Android phone working only took a minute including downloading and installing the app. Can call between the two phones using the extension numbers quite easily.

Had problem registering onto the 3CX server via a VPN connection from over the internet though. The phone logged onto the VPN fine, but it appears I can't access anything on the remote side ... can't access the web, or any network shares, can't even ping anything on via the VPN.

Also can't ping the phone 192.168.2.160 from the 3CX server (XP Pro SP3) side. By adding a route (route add 192.168.2.160 192.160.2.1 metric 1) it became possible to ping the phone from the XP box but made no difference on the phone end. Opened a terminal session on the phone and can't ping anything thru the VPN connection. Grrrr.

Even tried that from a Windows7 laptop, don't know what went wrong here, used to be able to log in via VPN and access all the network shares etc. Have port forwarded both 1723 and 500 to the XP box on the TP-Link ADSL modem/router, so don't know what is stopping it from working.

1271628 2012-04-25 14:02:00 I found the uptime not as good in my experience. It's easier to keep a linux box maintained & patched & online.

It's not really much different from FreePBX, take something such as Elastix and it takes most of the pain out.

There's a lot that can go wrong, a *lot*, so I'd suggest starting a new thread with more information such as the IP ranges used and more.

Most of the softphones are interchangeable, nothing special either way.
