| 10776 | 2001-04-03 01:16:00 | Whenever I reach a link resulting in 'The page cannot be displayed...etc' then my dial up connection drops off. This started after I used an Xtra disk to run through the registration process which I think re-installed IE4. Previously had no problems with IE4 with the free ISPs. Have since tried to remove IE4 (but couldn't) so have now installed IE5.5 (from an Xtra disk). The problem persists but is less frequent than it was. The problem does not occur using a pre-release version of Netscape 6. |

| 10777 | 2001-04-03 07:16:00 | Internet connection dropping off usually indicates 1 of 3 things . 1/ your modem is crap 2/ your telephone line is crap 3/ your ISP is crap If you call your isp they will walk thru the semantics of checking your modem . and then give up in disgust and refer you to the telephone co to check your line for noise etc (blah blah ) Assuming all that has been done then it must be the internet itself which is causing your problem ! Thats the crapolla of them all ! it is more likely to be a combination of all 3 things that is the root cause of your problem ! So you need to work thru each component at a time ... 1/ modem ... what does it download at ? can you set your email to check for new messages ever 5 minutes and keep the connection going for a couple of hours ? 2/ the line ? have you a fax , try Telecoms faxright service .(it free and tells more than the faults technician ever will ) 3/ the ISP , ok here my spin .... some ISP are lousy during the day and good at night, and vice versa! (i use three ) qid pro quo. ok to sum up it is possible to get the best out of what ever you have , it just a matter of starting at a point and working thru each component 1 at a time and deciding enough is enough.... While the conent of my post is a tad on the gruesome , I recently moved from a rural area that was the pits as far as internet was concerned , thru sheer frustration i managed to get a stable and reliable internet connection . but no thanks to the 3 components i mentioned . it was sheer determination that made it happen . if you need any more pointers please ask rgds ATW |
