10942 2001-04-06 11:51:00 For no obvious reason I have lost the conventional shutdown screens. In place of the Cloudy blue sky and Windows, now shutting down I have a full screen yellow brown fabric texture pattern and in place of the ready to close down message I have a similar texture pattern in deep orange red, then nothing. When the hard drive stops its winking red light I can switch off safely. At irregular intervals the conventional pattern reappears, then next time for shut down it is gone again.
It does not seem to have associated problems but is certainly disconcerting. Any suggestions to eliminate ?

10943 2001-04-07 07:46:00 Roy,

The startup and shutdown screens are stored in one of three files:
c:\logo.sys (Windows startup screen)
c:\windows\logow.sys (shutting down message)
c:\windows\logos.sys (safe to turn off message)

These files are just bitmap files with .sys extensions and can be opened with MS Paint. If these files have become corrupted it may explain your problem, try replacing them with the originals files off the Win98 CD.

Thanks for your comment.
However, all three files
c:\logo.sys (Windows startup screen)
c:\windows\logow.sys (shutting down message)
c:\windows\logos.sys (safe to turn off message)
are intact - openable under MSPAINT and look OK, so the problem must be elsewhere -
presumably when these files are normally called for.

10945 2001-04-08 11:53:00 check what sceensaver/customised the look of windows programs u have used. there r some which set up new startup, shutdown and turnoff screens. (love the 'you have been infected with windows' one) some are buggy and can mess up your system. Guest (0)

I have only ever used a standard screensaver, such as 'Mystufy Your Mind', and not often even that. There is no special customisation of windows display.
Thanks
