| 11037 | 2001-04-08 01:09:00 | Problems with Microsoft Word Over the last week I had been experiencing the following problems when I use MSWord on my laptop. If I opened an existing document using word whilst the machine is not connected to the network, word will not open the document. Instead it freezes and ultimately the task has to be terminated by using the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination which brings up the program manager. Word is then shown as an application not responding. I have also noticed that when this happens two applications clisvc95 AND/OR odpwin9x.exe are shown as not responding. These seem to be part of the Microsoft Systems management tools though I have only a very vague idea of that what these do. When I restart word it opens a dialog box which says that it has found that the file that I was working on has been corrupted and offers to recover it. If you do this the file is junked with all formatting being lost and on some occasions some of the text. If I don?t recover the file, it will open normally when the PC is connected to a network I have just conducted an experiment in which I opened a particular file with my PC connected to the network, noted that it opened perfectly, and then removed the network connection with out restarting the PC and then trying to reopen the same file. As in previous cases the file refused to open and was then corrupted. I then re-connected to the network and repeated the process. The file opened perfectly despite having been corrupted. In addition to this I have found that PowerPoint refuses to allow me to change the formatting of font whilst my laptop is not connected to the network. I have absolutely no idea why they should be. The only recent change to my laptop was to switch from the previous antivirus program to McAffee. I don't think that this is the problem as when I start the PC without McAffee, the same problems occur. The only other change that I have noticed is that when I close the PC down when it is connected to a network, I get a dialogue box saying that there are two other users accessing the PC and that logging off will disconnect them. I find this terribly frustrating and spent more than 1 1/2 hours at Auckland airport trying to do some work and finally achieving nothing. Cameron Gay. |
