11014 2001-04-07 14:52:00 I have a problem that when I log on to the net either web or email, after 8 minutes I get disconnected, this happens twice and the third attempt i get 1.5 hours before disconnection. then I must shut down the whole computer and go through the whole process again. This happens 95% of the time.
I have had the phone lines tested by telecom with an excellent result, Balance 71.6Db and Ground Noise 42Db. I have reloaded O/S twice (win98se) and also re installed IE5.5 twice with no better luck. I have had a new phone line put in the house connecting straight to the computer, still no better. I have brought a brand new computer with 56k ext Daimond stealth modem which has turned out to be worse performace (only 2mins) than my 4yr old rockwell 33.6. My isp say it's not them and don't offer much help at all. I am at the stage where I believe I have tried everything to sort this but never getting any further ahead, just the run around with every one blaming some one else and not having any solutions to offer. If any one can try to point me a different direction it would be appriecated, at the moment I feel I'm banging my head against a wall for the last six months all for some one elses entertainment.

11015 2001-04-07 22:50:00 The uniformity of your problem, and the fact you have eliminated most hardware causes, leads me to the conclusion it is most likely software related, are you running any instant messenger type programmes?? I have on the odd occasion come across systems running Pal Talk, ICQ, Yahoo Instant all at one time that caused a similar problem ( the clients could connect fine and pages would load as normal after about five minutes everything would stop working, the connection would be disconnected by the ISP as they were interpreting it, that the connection was idle, you had to reboot and go through the process again and again)
the solution in one of these cases was to remove Yahoo instant and Pal Talk, the other we removed Yahoo and only had Pal Talk starting when required, not automatically loading when you connected to the net)
my conclusion is that when to many programmes look for a connection to the internet to autoload, it overloads the process and everything just stops.
I don't know if this effects you or not, however it might just pay to look and see just how many utilities you have accessing you connection, others are things like Guard dog and also programmes that check for auto updates (turn off this feature if you are having problems )

11016 2001-04-08 04:05:00 The above advice is good...I would also ask have you checked your 'Advanced Dial-up' properties? To do so open Internet Explorer and go > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Advanced. There you will find two radio boxes: 'disconnect if idle for ...' and 'disconnect when conection may no longer be needed'. Make sure they are both unchecked, then click Okay/okay/okay (3). Guest (0)
11017 2001-04-08 06:09:00 thanks for your response, but i'm not running any of those other programs, even on my clean install and new computer i was still getting the same result.
thanks again for your input

11019 2001-04-08 11:25:00 do u use any tweaker programs. eg dun optimiser, ispeed. if so what r your settings?
do you have any surgeprotectors on the phone line and power??
how far away from the exchange r u ?
any lan cards?

more details the better.

11020 2001-04-08 13:42:00 no to all of them, i'm not running any tweaker progs etc, i'm running a phone line straight into the computer, i am less than one kilometer from exchange, no lan cards either, just a straight forward cumputer system Guest (0)
11021 2001-04-08 14:34:00 try dun optomizer its free and simple www.tweakfiles.com or pcworld might have it. set it for optomin dailup. have a play.
surge protectors sometimes help(i doubt it in this case) and protect your comp at the same time. panamax recommended.
post back with results please.
if it dosnt help find details on your computer. motherboard, chipset, drivers, cards etc

11022 2001-04-08 23:30:00 Hope this helps:
If you get disconnected frequently, try this extra modem setting:

Go to Modems in Control Panel.
From Modems select Properties, select the Connection Tab, click the Advanced button
In the Extra settings dialogue box, enter S10=50
This will force the modem to stay connected without a carrier, up to 5 seconds.
