11074 2001-04-09 04:30:00 I'm thinking of upgrading my motherboard and CPU. I would like some advice?
I thought to upgrade to maybe a AMD Duron 700 or 900 MHz CPU but which motherboard?, maybe a FIC AZ11E Socket A, with the VIA KT133 Chipset or VIA KT133E, or either a MSI K7T Pro with the VIA KT133 chipset or the MSI K7T Turbo with the KT133A chipset. The more I read the more confused I become. I want a motherboard that can be upgraded more and one that is clockable. Any advice will be much appreciated, regards Grant

11075 2001-04-09 08:06:00 I have looked at this as I am considering a similiar upgrade myself. The conclusion I have come too is the very best Motherboard for the AMD is the ASUS A7V 133.

Its rather pricey for a motherboard at about $400 incl gst but I have been told its THE board for AMD.

If you are running PC100 ram its also recommended you upgrade to PC133 ram to take advantage of the powerful features of the board.

11077 2001-04-10 05:27:00 Hello Grant
Read the following link re KT133A motherboards from Tom's Hardware, one of the most respected sites on the net.
You will see that the KT133A chipset is so good that most reputable MB's running it are 100% stable and reliable.
My personal preference for cost (under $300 ) reliability and probably the best for overclocking ( read the reviews at overclocker ) goes to the soltek 75KAV 266MHz.
However as I said Tom's has just reviewed 16 KT133A's the first batch of 10,they declined to name a winner saying they were all very good with differences so marginal as not to matter, the second batch of 6 saw the new ASUS with a bios update come out on top but again very marginal, the Aopen was actually rated the best overall taking into account cost and features, and the Soltek, DFI, and AZZA although not tested in the second review still got a mention as being well worth looking at.
Some more food for thought, remember Athlons especially Overclocked Athlon's run very HOT so remember not to skimp on cooling when you build your machine.
hope this helps.
