11229 2001-04-12 08:02:00 try running scandisk first but click the THOROUGH circle first for a complete check of your drive c:
If you have a compressed drive displays h: and c: you may be in for a bit of sweat.

11230 2001-04-12 08:33:00 Sigh!!!
Type 'defragment' into the Press F1 search box and you will find hundreds of answers to this question. As I said a short time ago all problems with defrag have been answered many times over.

11231 2001-04-12 08:57:00 Have you tried closing all the programmes you have running in the background?
Alt/Ctrl/Dlte - then one by one 'End Task' all programmes there except Explorer and Systray. Those two must be left running.
Hope this works for you, it solved my scandisk/defrag problems.

11232 2001-04-12 10:21:00 Restart your computer, whilst going through the start process tap f8 9about once asecond)till it opens a menu with about 6 options. The one you want is 'start my computer in safe mode:no6 option i think. select that optionand your comp should start in safe mode. You'll know ,it will have safe mode in each corner of the screen.run defrag then scan disc ,sit back and watch the blinkin lights Guest (0)
11233 2001-04-14 07:50:00 amen to tony's *sigh* TURN OFF THE VIRUS SCANNER!! I think everybody who uses a PC, and subscribes to PC world, has asked this question. Its other thigs 'writing' to you hard disk that makes this happen. Microsoft should have this written in there defrag window. Turn off the programs. Hope this works. cya Guest (0)

http://www.powerdefrag.com/
or www.allstar.nildram.co.uk
When you run it, it will reboot your system and run the Windows defragger without any other programs running in the background, not even the Windows GUI is loaded, giving a totally controlled enviroment.
