11323 2001-04-14 14:03:00 I bought a new kitset a week back. Everything seems to work well, except that the system seems to hard-crash 'randomly'. This behaviour might attribute to incompatibility of the CPU with the motherboard. I checked the manual for my motherboard, which advises me that the BC133KT-100 motherboard only supports frequencies up to 1Ghz, for the Athlon chip, ( i have a 1.2Ghz) but reserves support for higher frequencies (what does that mean?). I updated drivers for essentially everything in my system, including an update to the system BIOS, but to no avail. Are there any boards that readily support 1.2Ghz Athlon Thunderbird CPU, or am I missing something here?

My system consists of
D-Link v.90/56k modem
Tornado nVidia Vanta 16mb 3D
BCM BC133KT-100 motherboard with VIA KT133Mhz chipset
Soundblaster Live! DTT
2 hard drives ATA100 and ATA66
Using:
Windows 98 SE

These crashes are getting upsetting at times. I am quite certain, that it's not a software problem, as the system crashes when i play Deus Ex (a EAX enabled game), Thief 2 (another EAX enabled game), Age of Kings (a non-EAX eanabled game), and when I watch video, surfing, system startup, even when clicking a harmless button in a standard window.. There is no rules that when the system tends to lock up, it just locks up at will at any time.

Please help.

PS. I didn't overclock the CPU, as I know doing so might cause the lockups described above, which is why it's so odd here.

11324 2001-04-15 02:07:00 I am not sure whats causing your problem but in answer to your motherboard question...

The ASUS A7V133 is the best motherboard for the athlon chips its kinda pricey thou at around $500 but you won't regret buying it.

11325 2001-04-15 03:04:00 what r your motherboard settings? memory size, modules, settings? heat sink type, case fans, cpu temps? was the operating system freshly installed when u upgraded? Guest (0)
11326 2001-04-15 10:18:00 Hmmm! Without trying to teach granny to suck eggs here... Have you visited either AMD's site or the MBoard manufacturer for any insight into the settings? kinda funky reserving support, makes you wonder how old the MBoard is ; )
Some thoughts...
Have you disabled onboard graphics & sound? Checked the Jumper settings (If any exist) all the usual, RAM...

BTW Have you slaved the 66 off the 100 or the other way around?

Good luck...

11327 2001-04-15 12:00:00 Ok, the ATA100 is my primary master and ATA66 is the slave, does it matter if I switch them around?

I visited both AMD and BCM, (bcmcom.com). They have the specs for the board, but doesn't mention anything about reserved support.

There is no onboard Graphics, but I did disable the AC97 onboard sound. My motherboard is jumperless (well, almost, except for the one for CMOS resetting)

Actually there is some progress here. When I disable my sound card, everything works well again (with all the DMA enabled for my 2 hard drives and CD-Rom). Is there a conflict? and how do I solve it.
