| 11264 | 2001-04-13 04:56:00 | Hello, I have had two partitions, one running win98se and the other running windows 2000, I recently decided to merge them so that I would then only have my win98. I used partition magic, which said it would merge them ( Win98 was C:, win2000 was D:). Now PArtition magic had first rearranged these drives so nbfact in the diagram win2000 was infront of win98. Once merged however, the diagram said that C: would start at the beginning , so after approx 2hrs in dos, my computer rebooted, and lo and behold nothing would boot at all( just a flashing cursor). Using my boot disk I can see that the file structure is still there, but when I try and type win at the prompt, it then says that it cant find registry entries and so on...and that I should run win98 setup to fix this. What exactly does this mean? Must I reinstall windows in order to get it working, and if I do, will that mean I have to reinstall everything again? I hope there is a much easier way to fix this, any help would be much appreciated. |

| 11265 | 2001-04-13 06:28:00 | A flashing horizontal cursor? nothinh else? Set an active(bootable) partiton If so, restart off a boot/startup floppy. At the prompt a:\> type FDISK and press Enter Select N for large disk support At the wiindow select option 2 and follow the instructions Remove the floppy and reboot when finished. Reinialise the master Boot Record If that doesn't work or the drive has an active (bootable) partition, at the command prompt after starting off a boot disk, A:\> type FDISK/MBR and press enter. Remove the floppy and reboot when finished. Alas - drastic measures now And if that does work - reinstall unless you want the info back, in which case it will probably cost. Merlin |

| 11266 | 2001-04-13 07:13:00 | damn, I was hoping you weren;t going to say that! 1. I checked in fdisk, and it is the only existing partition and it is set to active..... 2. I used fdisk /mbr and that didnt work... I had this problem before when I first made the second partition, pmagic actually moved my primary behind the new partition, that is why it didnt'g boot the first time, i installed win98 on the second partition, and then used pmagic to switch them back around again, which worked, but now after merging the two partitions, it will not work. When trying with a bootdisk to launch windows, I get messages saying 'cannot find registry entry blah blah', or ' something is wrong with vfat format' etc. Please work some magic and get me outta this fix :) ....without having to reinstall everything ;) |
