| 11394 | 2001-04-16 16:49:00 | I have a problem defraging my system. I am running Windows 98 on my Compaq. Presario and can not figure out why it takes so long for my defrag to work. I was shown the other day how to use the Maintenance Wizard, which I came home to start that evening. The laptop did the first two parts of the maintenance, check hard disk for errors and delete unneccessary files from the hard disk, but when it got to the speed up your most frequently used programs. It was on 0% to 1% for 12 hours so I stopped it. I tried again for 7 hours, but it was still on 0% to 1%. I didn't think it should take that long.I hope you can help me with this. Your help would be greatley appreciated. Thanks | Guest (0) | ||

| 11397 | 2001-04-17 11:09:00 | For interests sake, the most likely problem is that Defrag has a feature such that it restarts the whole process each time a disk write is detected, to ensure that it includes this new information in its defrag. Thus it is always a good idea to close down all running programs before defraging your hard drive to reduce the possibility of disk writes. Winamp is one such program that is notorious for constant disk writes. | Guest (0) | ||
