Bad Command or File Name is DOS's not so informative way of telling you that something (usually you) has tried to either run a command that DOS does not recognise, or to access a file that DOS cannot find. Rather than being a virus, it is much more likely that some program you once had is still trying to run itself after you have either moved or deleted it. Without knowing anything further, my first guess would be that you have recently deleted or moved something like MSN Messenger, and that something is still trying to reference these files. If it is occuring on bootup, the first places to look for it would be in the autoexec.bat, config.sys and in the registry. In each case, looking cannot do any harm, however there is always the risk of accidentally changing something. If you arent comfortable with accessing system information, I suggest you dont have a fiddle, as you can really bugger things up if you start making changes to your system registry. Norton SystemWorks is good for this task, as it has several checks that check through your computer looking for invalid file references and safely cleaning them up. |
