11579 2001-04-19 21:18:00 My colleague and I have just set up a website. I have used search engines to see if it was found but to no avail. How does one get their website picked up by the various search engines? We are probably most keen to have the SearchNZ engine locate it. Information about indexing was pretty confusing from the web.

Thanks

11580 2001-04-19 23:54:00 Well, I can't speak for SearchNZ, since they are our competition, but if you head over to SearchNOW.co.nz, IDG's own local search engine, you can add your URL there in an online form.

In SearchNOW's case, we have a spider that attempts to go through the whole .nz domain space each month. Adding your URL in manually is just another way of ensuring you are indexed. It's early days for us (we launched late last year) and we've had a few teething troubles but it seems to give pretty good results.

However, the 'quality' of the index result is very dependant on how the various search engines create their indices, as well as the format of your web pages. You will need good Meta tags on your page, but almost all the serach engines treat Meta tags differently. Some lime certain tags, others don't. There is a whole industry based around search-engine opimisation, and it is a black art.

11583 2001-04-20 06:14:00 I hear what you say about wanting to associate your site with search NZ, but if you're really serious about wanting the world to see your site then there is really only one search engine to consider & that is Google.
I have found many NZ sites using Google which were not located using SearchNZ. The link below lets you register directly with Google's search engine and gives you the option of removing the site at a later stage if you want to:
www.google.com
