11534 2001-04-18 23:11:00 I am running NT4 SP6 and recently upgraded from IE4.01 to IE5.5 SP1 (as provided on the PC World Cover CD). The upgrade completed without problems, now when I start the browser it fails to find my designated Home Page. (I've tried changing my Home Page but still no joy). I have the system set to automatically dial when I start IE and this completes OK but will not find the Home Page. If I 'STOP' the process and select one of my 'FAVORITE' sites, things work OK. If I manually dial my SP first, when I start IE it finds my designated Home Page OK.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why IE will not find my Home Page as described above. Thanks in anticipation of any assistance.

Scroll down.

How and when should I 'Scroll Down'? I've tried the down arrow and page down while IE is trying to find my home page but this has no effect. Also there are no scroll bars on the IE window during this process. Could you give a bit more guidance. Thanks!

11537 2001-04-19 02:31:00 It just takes a while for some of us to have the penny drop. Please ignore my previous reply. I now assume you are refering to the item on PCWORLD home page about changing the default Home Page in IE.

I had already done this but without success. It doesn't matter what home page is designated, it does not find the site. 'STOP'ping the process (or waiting until the 'Unable to Find Page' message is displayed) and selecting a site from 'MY FAVOURITES' seems to be the only solution; clicking on 'HOME' or selecting another site from 'Address' drop down does not work either. Once a FAVOURITE site has been opened, then everything else works OK.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

11538 2001-04-20 23:16:00 Hi Phil,
Two possible causes -

1. The page cannot load until you have finished connecting to your ISP - hence the 'failure to load' message on start up, or

2. Microsoft Update feature.

I think what may be happening is IE5.5 is trying to connect to the Windows Update site as a background task.

On start up, IE5.5 looks for the auto update site at Microsoft - this happens behind the scenes and when it has done the update check, it then goes to your designated Home Page.

If you are in the process of dialling (as in your case when you open IE5.5 and have it dial out) there is no internet connection available immediately - this causes the error message about not being able to find the page - however, if you look at the full message, you will probably see something like
- windowsupdate.microsoft.com

The reason it works correctly when you open IE5.5 after you have connected is because IE5.5 is able to complete the 'sneaky' update check and then goes on to open your 'designated Home Page' as normal.

Try disabling the Windows Update feature
