11740 2001-04-23 22:49:00 When you press cancel at the windows or users logon prompt you seem to bypass any password system and log onto windows.
I am running windows 98 and want to stop certain people from using my computer. I've set up a couple of user profiles for the users i want using my computer, but is there any way to make sure you have to enter a password to log onto windows?

11741 2001-04-24 01:29:00 Windows 9.x greatest flaw is its lack of security. The best way to restrict access is with poledit, this is located on you Win CD in the admin folder.

When the logon banner appears press escape to logon as the default user. Run poledit.exe from the CD, open the local user settings and add the appropriate restrictions. Save the settings. People can still logon but the amount of access they have is limited.

11742 2001-04-25 02:28:00 I had this problem a couple of years ago while I was running Windows 98. Other than using the Policy editor the only real good option is to upgrade to Windows 2000.
Of course then you have the issues of certain games and hardware not working with your OS. On my system I run both Windows 2000 and 98 on separate partitions. Windows 2000 is what the system boots to by default and no unauthorised users can logon and authorised users are restricted thanks to the NTFS file system. To access 98 you need to load Partition Magic 4 from a floppy and set the 98 partition active before you can use 98. This is a unique setup that created myself and I don't know anyone else that uses it, most people just use the Windows 2000 bootmanager to choose whether to boot 2000 or 98.
