11888 2001-04-28 02:18:00 Hi,

Sveral copies of the dialog box for connecting to the internet keeps appearing for no apparent reason. The longer I leave my PC idle, the more copies there are - each time I cancel there are more copies behind to cancel until I get rid of them all. This happends when I do not have any internet applications open.

I've used msconfig to try and ensure that there are no applications loading in the background that would be trying to access the internet. I've turned of scheduled updates for Norton Antivirus.

This happended to me a couple of months ago and I was able to fix it by restoring a copy of the registry from before the problem appeared. Unfortunately I recently had to format my hard drive and so don't have any appropriate registry copy to use.

I'm using Win 98 and Internet Explorer 5.5.4522.1800IC with Neowatch personal firewall on a Pentium III 550e.

I would really appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this annoying behaviour.

Thanks,

Brett

11889 2001-04-28 03:42:00 ...you appear to be approaching this problem in a methodical manner - here's a few other suggestions:

(i) turn off or disable any 'live-update' function on all software that is installed

(ii) open your 'Synchronisation' utility and see if anything is checked for updates

(iii) Do want your Desk Top set to be viewed as a web page ? If not - disable: right click on desk top > properties > click 'Web' tab and uncheck the 'view my Active Desk top as a Web page'

(iv) Turn off the 'bring up terminal window before dialing' [if you are in Internet Explorer go: Tools > Options > connections > settings > properties > configure > options.]

(v) While inside the 'Dial-up Networking' check all your settings and consider uninstalling and then reinstalling.

(v) While on the 'Connections' tab of the Internet Options box - check (enable) 'Perform system security check before dialing'

(vi) Open Outlook Express if you have it and go: tools > options > General tab. Disable the 'check for new messages every...' and ensure that the box reads 'do not connect if my computer is not connected at this time' [other mail clients will have a similar setting].

(vii) Does your Browser have any Browser Helper Objects or add-ons? If so - have a close look at their settings. Try the following site if you're unsure whether or not you have them:

http://www.xcaptor.org

(viii) Failing that or any other suggestions and if the problem persists - you might consider the possibility of checking your system for any 'spyware' that is trying to ring home.
A useful freeware utility for this is 'Ad-aware' from the Swedish company Lavasoft at:

I'm thinking along the lines that an untidy uninstall may have left some component on your system that continues to try and 'ring home'. Usually one needs advanced skills to edit the registry and delete these nasties - but fortunately there are some good utilities available for us mere mortals.

Should you pursue this option I would recommend the freeware 'RegCleaner 4.1' from Jouni Vuorio which can be downloaded from his site:

Once installed, go to the 'Software' tab and carefully inspect all the software shown as being Installed. Any programme that is listed here - and you *know* it has been 'uninstalled' - can be dealt to quickly and easily.
