11941 2001-04-29 01:30:00 The Sound Recorder Menus accessible from Accessories only allows me to record a message 29 seconds in length Q.1 Is it possible to modify it somehow so that I can extend the length of time of the message. I hardly get going and the indicator has whizzed right to the end of the window. Q2.To send this audio message as an email attachment how do you compress it and do you use jpeg or what? Guest (0)
11942 2001-05-02 02:47:00 Hello Bryan, I see no-one has yet replied to your query. So here goes, last time I made a response I was flamed...Oh well.
Q1. No you cant extend Sound Recorder. It records sound as a wave, .wav extension file. These are very big files about 1 megabyte per minute of recording, which leads to Q2.
You probably need to use a sound encoder program which record in many different formats, .asf, .ra, .vqf, .mp3 etc. These programs usually let you select the recording bit rate, which for speech could be say 8 kbps, thus a smaller file size. Your recipient needs to be able to play back.
Your best bet could be Windows Media Encoder from:
www.microsoft.com

There is a lot in this program you may not use, but it will produce a .asf sound file from a line-in microphone, and your e-mail recipient can use Windows Media Player to play it back.

Someone else may know of a smaller encoder program to produce a windows media file?
Playing with sound files is fun, enjoy.

11943 2001-05-03 03:39:00 Further to above, on second thoughts, MusicMatch JukeBox, on the PC World CD will record as low as 5kbps, in windows media audio, .wma. 1 minute of speech is about 45 KB, as opposed to about 1MB for wav. These files will be small enough to attach to an e-mail and can be played back by recipient with WM Player or MusicMatch. Guest (0)
