On the back of this thread where I asked for help on our freeview setup: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz , I've now taken the plunge & bought a tivo, but am now wondering if the co-axial aerial splitter box is going to work for going digital? If you look at the photo, the splitter box does seem pretty prehistoric. I'm hoping this splitter will work to connect a PC with a Hauppauge USB tuner as media device, can anyone confirm if this splitter will work or needs replacing with a modern version please? Many thanks |

As far as the carriage of signal is concerned the swap from analogue to digital should be of no consequence, with arguably a better signal once digital as the 'echo' of signal down the cables will likely not degrade a digital picture the way it would with an analogue picture. They're fairly inexpensive if you want to replace it, not that you should need to. Note that they vary with models for indoor and outdoor. As for the USB tuner... others here will know more, but my previous experience with a VIVO graphics card was fairly disappointing when it came to trying to record tv straight to avi or mpg. The task requires a very significant amount of CPU time and is not a task to try to achieve in 'real time' on budget / consumer level hardware, or on a machine that is running all the other stuff and fluff that Windows brings with it. Newer multi-core machines may have got past the issues I hit, but I do wonder if HDTV can be pumped through a USB interface without losses. |

But, I'm using a mini aerial (the aerial that came with the tuner), not an outside aerial. But the pic is still clear. This records in MP4 tho, not AVI or Mpeg | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

If I were to replace it, which one out of this auction would you recommend? www.trademe.co.nz I'm guessing this one as straight replacement?: "Coax Plug Skt Types, 2nd Row:- EU2501 ,2way,Splitter,Coax,Plug,/2,Skts" cheers |
