1273163 2012-05-29 21:35:00 Just reread the second page of that article after Nickg mentioned malwarebytes.

This is from the article in relation to malwarebytes:
Malwarebytes isn’t something you’ll want to use as your primary antivirus software, Errrrrr malwarebytes is never marked as an antivirus, because its not, its antimalware -- so working on those lines, if the people who wrote the article cant or dont know the difference between an antivirus and antimalware -- that says a lot for the credibility of the report :D

One other thing they mention - they indicate the free version, which doesn't have Real-Time Active Malware Prevention or Scheduled Scanning, only the Pro (paid) version does.

I was thinking about the 57% or so detection rates against know malware.

1273165 2012-05-29 22:06:00 Yeah, we've also got one gig of ram and avg 2012 full on our laptop. It takes about 10-20min to fully start up and stop laging and freezing so you can acctually run something.

I don't even want to know why you would do something like that.

Yep ! been saying that for a while now, Malwarebytes is not as good as some people think it is, there are better ones about. But the general rule is use more than one Antimalware program.

Or you could reduce your software bloat, clearly whatever you're using is not suitable.

1273169 2012-05-31 03:30:00 The S.M.A.R.T extortionware is not much fun. Got one here yesterday. Hid the files and deleted MSE. Gotta get 'Gxk.exe' out of the startups or bingo, you've got it again. B***tards. linw (53)

That is where I like a Linux CD or USB stick with anti-virus on it. You can nuke the lot that way.

1273171 2012-05-31 22:41:00 Yea, good point. That's the way I'll go next time I get one of those in here. The Windows Defender offline is supposed to be good, too.

But with this one I was more than a bit concerned over the hidden files issue so I slavishly followed the instructions I got online.

Cheers.
