1250422 2011-12-23 21:26:00 Apologies ~ Spent years doing stats work for companies, sadly stats still in my head.

Sounds like a speech by Sir Humphrey!
(I think I know what you mean though)

1250423 2011-12-24 08:18:00 There is such a variance in job skills and availability of personnel that I do not think an average has any relevance, gradebdan (2186)
1250424 2011-12-24 08:24:00 To the payer of the salaries, they are too high.
To the recipient, they are too low.

To the man in the middle, average seems a bit of an exaggeration.

A day off is good in moderation, but too much moderation is bad for you, even if it is the only thing we all (occasionally) agree is taxed fairly.

1250425 2011-12-24 09:21:00 so median salary for nz as a whole is $ 550

Yeah looking at that page, I'm presuming that's post-tax? Otherwise the median is $28,600 PA?

1250427 2011-12-24 13:14:00 Unfortunately so many people must work in low paying jobs, so low they're not worth advertising in the papers or whatever.
So you don't get the accurate picture, blah blah blah.

I would imagine 30k a year would be a generous salary.

says the average is 73k? how could this be true? most ppl in Auckland i know and the jobs going around is 30k to 40k ish.

Seems surprisingly low given you don't normally advertise low skilled jobs under $50k. If I advertised a job in my team for under $73 K I could guarantee I would get no qualified applicants. There is a skill shortage in this country, $73K is at the low end of the scale for anyone with a good qualification and a few years experience.

Low skilled is under $50K? Hmm, all my jobs must be low skilled then, including the current one.

It pays $40K. Helpdesk for hosting, domains etc.....I wouldn't say it's easy...but then as a low skilled worker, I suppose I would think that.........

Help desk is considered entry level generally - you need some skill to get the job but you'll get a lot of experience doing it. So it is relatively low skilled but is probably a good jumping point for a higher paid role.

1250431 2011-12-28 20:47:00 They also have more illegal immigrants and unskillied labour.

I thought this was more of an issue in the fruit picking industry, of which there isn't much in Auckland (until you get out towards Pukekohe, which is more vegetables than fruit). Given various rules & regulations you won't find many illegal unskilled immigrants in factories and manufacturing [does NZ still have a manufacturing sector? :) ] Did you have anything specific in mind metla?

Edit : sorry, misinterpreted your post. Yes we definitely have more illegal immigrants in Auckland and yes we definitely have more unskilled labour in Auckland. Probably based on the sheer weight of numbers. However, I'm not sure there is a huge problem of illegal immigrants taking unskilled jobs off locals in Auckland. Unless you know something?
