1273300 2012-05-02 09:54:00 Is the LED on the modem/router (for the desktop whatever port its connected to) on ?? Plug it into another port on the router. If that doesnt work, try another cable from the desktop to the router. Is there a firewall on the desktop (besides Windows firewall)? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1273301 2012-05-02 09:59:00 @Re No, should they have been? never have been in the past and it seemed to have worked without them...

@Speedy The desktop isnt plugged directly into the router. It's connecting through another computer.

1273302 2012-05-02 10:06:00 Umm what do you mean connected through another computer? Does this other computer have 2 nics on it?? If the modem has 4 ports, I would plug it into one of its ports, not through another computer Speedy Gonzales (78)

1273304 2012-05-02 10:09:00 So how have you configured your laptop to share the connection with the desktop? fred_fish (15241)
1273305 2012-05-02 10:14:00 @speedy pc --> ethernet cable --> laptop then using the "allow others to connect through this computers internet connection" or whatever. Under sharing tab in properties for the wifi connection, set to share out to the ethernet port. Same settings i have always used. icow (15313)
1273306 2012-05-02 10:21:00 Err, so WHAT exactly do you have there? 2 desktops and a laptop? A modem/router in one? Or a separate modem and router? Do you have a modem/router?

If you have a modem/router, is it wireless? And how many ports does it have? Or are you on dialup or something? Its sounds like you've configured something wrong there

If you've got a modem/router and its wireless (and its got more than 1 port), you should plug the desktops in it (if they've got nics and you've got ethernet cables). Then enable the wireless on the router / and make it secure. Then set up the wireless on the laptop so it can talk / connect to the router

Or is this mobile broadband or something?

1273307 2012-05-02 10:54:00 Ok here's what I have. In my house there are 3 floors. First floor has the router/modem (modem has wifi and 4 ethernet ports). On the second story I have my desktop and my laptop (where they have basically always have been. The laptop is connected straight to the desktop via standard ethernet cable. On standard broadband (with telecom). Wireless is enabled, that is how the laptop gets internet. Desktop doesn't have a wifi card. I'm connecting the laptop to the desktop the same way I have previously (with this laptop which is running w7). I have also shared internet to my desktop using my macbook (which i no longer have) using the same principal (just slightly different config seeing as it's mac). My question is what could have changed on my windows laptop or desktop which is stopping me from viewing webpages on my desktop (they work fine on everything else)? All other internet functions on the desktop seem to work fine e.g. i was playing starcraft 2 online on my desktop about an hour ago. icow (15313)
1273308 2012-05-02 11:06:00 post the 'ipconfig /all' from both. fred_fish (15241)
1273309 2012-05-02 11:18:00 That sounds like a complicated setup! I would either install a wireless card or USB adapter on the desktop.

Or get something like this (www.noelleeming.co.nz). You plug one of these into the router's ethernet ports, and into power. And the other WD livewire into the power point near the laptop/desktop. And connect both with ethernet. Info about this is here (wdc.com). Both of these have 4 ports on them. So, you can plug 4 devices with Ethernet into them

This uses power for the network, and can be faster than wireless. Just as long as the power is from one source, this should work
