1250868 2011-12-27 19:44:00 Started at entry-level helpdesk on $32K when I was 18.
On double that now for my regular day-job.
Usually charge 6-7x it for an hourly rate when I do on-the-side consulting. Consulting is the best :D

1250869 2011-12-27 20:40:00 excuse me? 75k is the median salary in auckland? helpdesk gets paid more than network admins and system admins gets 53k starting out, bull crap, that is so in accurate.
You're pretty quick to dismiss everyones opinion so why are you asking for it? If you think what everyone is pointing out to you who are in the industry already is bull ****, then you are on another planet.

Start being realistic with yourself, it seems clear you think you are worth much more than the industry norm for some reason. There is no subsitute for experience and you dont have any, expect to start at the bottom of the heap and work hard to get yourself into a better position.
Just because the median salary in Auckland is 75k, dont expect to start on it and you will have to be in the industry for a good few years before making 75k if ever.

I'll repeat my first question, so, what do you expect your hourly rate to be based on your qualifications and experience?

Why do I ask? Because it is likely to be asked at an interview and if you go to high, you'll be out before you start and if you go to low, you are selling yourself short.

1250870 2011-12-27 20:42:00 9oh man that absolute i.t salary guy is totally bull crap. It is so inaccurate.

Looks fairly correct to me.

As for me, I started on $15 an hour for some short term contract work, went to $32K for permanent, then went up and down all over the place depending where I worked.

Best was $52K.

But I did 1st/2nd level support, cabling, shop tech, helpdesk and stayed in this area, didn't progress to anything better paying.

1250871 2011-12-27 20:48:00 The numbers in the August 2011 survey don't seem that far off what I'm hearing in the industry.

As I said earlier, the ranges are quite wide, and depend on a lot of factors. What exactly are you wanting to do (now, and in 5 years time)? Where did you do your degree, and how well did you do?

1250872 2011-12-27 21:51:00 hahah the absolute i.t guide is so in accurate come on says lower system admins gets 50 dollars a hour that would mean over 100k a year, i do not know any sys admins who get that hahaha most of the jobs advertised for sys admins are 40k to 60k smart (16614)
1250873 2011-12-27 21:53:00 Gotta agree with the previous 3 posts.

Qualifications may help you get a job, but depending on what you're doing, what I'm hearing from friends who have also recently come out of Uni, it doesn't give you any more pay.

You're after answers, but I think that somebody and Iantech also post some good questions to you that you should answer first.

1250874 2011-12-27 21:54:00 First IT job started on about $15 p/h doing lvl 1/2 support which was hands on, not call centre which was real lucky. Next did more of the same but on salary of 38k. Fast forward quite a few years and I do sys admin work and get 70k. I now interview people and while a degree is nice for me to see on someones CV, Ill take experience over it anyday.

Before starting work I did a degree in commerce with information systems major. Thought I was all that when I graduated and that everyone would want to hire me and pay me huge amounts of money. Turns out it was just a line on my CV that helped me get to the first stage in the recruitment process (usually an interview with a recruiter before even finding out what company you are interviewing for)

Good luck with your job hunt, its brutal out there.

1250876 2011-12-27 22:01:00 Those are contractor rates. Contractors don't have a guaranteed stream of work - so while they might get $50/hr, they might only have contracts to go to 7-8 months of the year. It's balancing the risk versus reward.

You can't compare those with salaried positions.
